How to Publish an Instagram 3 3 Profile Grid (Post or Reels) Without Breaking the Seams

A connected Instagram grid is one picture split across nine separate posts on your profile—not nine photos in one carousel. Instagram also uses different crops on the profile thumbnail, in the opened Feed post, and on a Reels cover. Export the wrong ratio or crop again in the app, and the seams drift.

This guide matches the SplitImage.io Instagram Grid Maker workflow: local browser processing (no upload to a server), a phone-frame profile preview with numbered tiles, even 3×3 splitting on the area you frame, and export as Post (3:4 or 4:5) or Reels cover (9:16) while the center 3:4 stitch area stays identical so the profile puzzle still lines up.

  Grid vs carousel

Workflow

What you publish

Profile

3×3 grid

Nine separate Posts or nine Reels

Nine thumbnails = one image

Carousel

One post, multiple slides

One tile only

Need a swipe post instead? Use the Instagram Carousel Splitter. Below: nine individual publishes.

  Why padding exists

Profile grid → tall 3:4 thumbnails (1080 × 1440 px per tile; full art 3240 × 4320 px is ideal).

Opened Feed post → often 4:5 (1080 × 1350).

Reels full screen → 9:16 (1080 × 1920), while the profile still shows the 3:4 center from the cover.

Do not split a raw 9:16 image as your grid source—compose in 3:4 (or 4:5) first, then split.

The tool always builds the puzzle from the same 3:4 stitch in the middle. Padding only fills the extra area for 4:5 or 9:16 exports; it does not change what the profile thumbnails show.

Step 1 — Upload one image

Open instagram-grid-maker (desktop is easier for large files).

Drag one JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, or HEIC file—or click to browse.

Keep 3×3 selected for a full profile takeover.

Figure 1 — Upload inside the phone preview; one image, 3×3 layout.

Step 2 — Frame the grid and pick Post or Reels

After upload you get cut lines, tile numbers (1 = bottom-right, 9 = top-left), drag to reposition, and a zoom slider (100%–300%).

Keep text, faces, and logos inside tiles, away from seams and outer edges (~5% inset on 3:4 art).

If the tool warns that output is below 1080 × 1440 (or 1080 × 1350 for 4:5 export), use a larger source when you can.

Use Change image if you need to swap the file; adjust framing until the phone preview looks right.

Output format

Mode

Export

Fill

Post → 3:4 stitch

Pure 3:4 tiles

None — best match for profile alignment

Post → 4:5 post

4:5 Feed images

Left/right fill around the same 3:4 center (on 4:5 art, also keep key content away from sides—about 33 px per side on a 1080 px-wide canvas)

Reels cover

9:16 per tile

Top/bottom fill around the same 3:4 center; padding shows in full-screen Reels, not on the profile grid

Figure 2 — Output format and Post aspect.

Step 3 — Fill modes (Reels or 4:5 Post only)

Fill is disabled for 3:4 stitch Post export.

Switch to Reels cover to configure top/bottom fill (Figure 3.1). The center 3:4 stitch stays sharp in every mode; only the letterbox bands change. Auto is the default.

Mode

Behavior

Auto

Uses sharp pixels from above/below the tile when the source has enough image; otherwise blur on that band (Figure 3.2).

Solid

Fills the bands with a flat color—pick a custom swatch in the tool (Figure 3.3).

Blur

Blurs the tile and extends into the top/bottom bands; adjust blur strength (Figure 3.4).

Upload BG

Cover-crops an uploaded image into the padding; use nudge to reposition (Figure 3.5).

4:5 post uses the same Solid, Blur, and Upload BG ideas on the left and right (no Auto). The screenshots below are Reels / 9:16 examples; the profile grid still shows the same 3:4 center in all cases.

Before you export, use the in-tool Fill preview on the center tile to compare modes live.

Figure 3.6 — Blur on 4:5 post (left/right bands; profile grid still uses the center 3:4).

  Step 4 — Download

Download ZIP for all nine tiles, or use ↓ on a single cell if you only need one file again.

Names run
_001
…
_009
—
_001
= Tile 1 (publish first),
_009
= Tile 9 (last).

Export is sRGB JPG (~80–85 quality). Unzip on your phone before posting; Instagram cannot open a ZIP.

Step 5 — Publish on Instagram

Chronological profiles: newest = top-left. Publish in tool order 1 → 9:

9 8 7 ← Tile 9 last (top left) — main caption & hashtags here
6 5 4
3 2 1 ← Tile 1 first (bottom right)

Post nine times in a row with no other content in between. Wait until each post is live before the next so order does not scramble. Tiles 1–8 can use a short line or number.

Feed Post: + → Post → one photo (
_001
first). Disable multi-select (no carousel). Crop: Original or matching 3:4 / 4:5 — no pinch-zoom or 1:1.

Reels: + → Reels → use each 9:16 export as the cover/visual. Same 1 → 9 order; do not re-crop to square.

Enable high-quality uploads in Instagram settings when available. Some accounts can reorder the profile grid after publishing; if not, plan the grid as a short-term layout.

Figure 4 — One file per publish; match the export ratio.

Step 6 — Check the profile grid

Open your profile in grid view. Judge thumbnails, not only the opened post or Reels player—the crops differ by surface.

Three rows should read as one image with clean seams.

One bad tile → usually in-app re-crop, wrong file, or carousel by mistake.

Whole grid mirrored → you likely posted 9 → 1 instead of 1 → 9.

Figure 5 — After nine consecutive publishes.

  Checklist

[ ] One source artwork; not nine separate uploads to the tool

[ ] 3×3, one export path for all nine: 3:4 Post, 4:5 Post + fill, or Reels + fill

[ ] Do not mix square, landscape, or random ratios in the same grid

[ ] Safe area: ~5% inset on 3:4; extra side margin on 4:5 art

[ ]
_001
→
_009
, no posts in between

[ ] One image per publish; no second crop on the phone

[ ] Final sign-off on the profile grid

  FAQ

Nine photos in one Instagram post?

That is a carousel (one profile tile). One image in the grid maker → nine files → nine publishes.

Opened post vs profile look different?

Expected. Fix the 3:4 stitch in the tool; use 4:5 or 9:16 padding for nicer full views without moving the puzzle.

Misaligned seams?

Wrong order, mixed tile sizes, content on cut lines, extra in-app crop, or a post inserted mid-sequence. Re-export one ZIP and republish in order when needed.

  Try it

Instagram Grid Maker — upload once, set Post or Reels, download the numbered ZIP, publish 1 → 9. Free, no sign-in, all processing in your browser.

If you design for Instagram, you are never working with one aspect ratio. The same file is shown as a profile thumbnail, as an opened Feed post, or as a full-screen Reel—and each surface can crop differently. Upload a tall 9:16 Reels cover and your profile may show only the middle band. Publish a perfect 4:5 portrait and the grid may still trim the sides. Below: those three surfaces, the usual ratios, and what to watch when nine posts need to line up as one picture.

Three places Instagram shows your image

Each upload is seen in three places:

Surface

Typical framing

What the viewer sees

Profile grid

Tall tiles in a 3-column grid

A thumbnail—often closer to 3:4 (portrait) on newer app versions

Feed (post opened)

Portrait-first

Often 4:5 for still photo posts; other ratios letterboxed or cropped in the viewer

Reels (full screen)

Vertical video

9:16 edge-to-edge while playing

The opened post and the profile thumbnail are not guaranteed to use the same crop. That is why a file can look “correct” when you tap it and “wrong” on your profile—or the opposite.

Feed photo posts (Post): common upload ratios

When you create a Post with a still image, Instagram accepts several shapes:

Ratio

Approx. size (px)

Strengths

Profile-grid note

4:5 portrait

1080 × 1350

Strong default for Feed; fills vertical space

Grid thumbnail may still behave like a taller 3:4 window—keep important detail centered, not on the far left/right

1:1 square

1080 × 1080

Products, logos, symmetric layouts

Works in Feed; less natural for a tall connected grid

1.91:1 landscape

1080 × 566

Wide scenes

Poor fit for a connected profile puzzle—thumbnails crop heavily

3:4 portrait

1080 × 1440

Aligns well with taller profile tiles

Strong starting point if the grid is your main canvas

Publishing APIs document allowed image aspect ranges (roughly between tall portrait and landscape). Inside the app you still choose or confirm crop at upload time—a second crop on the phone after you already prepared tiles is a common reason puzzle grids break.

Carousel vs grid: Selecting multiple images in one Post builds a carousel (swipe inside one post). Your profile shows one thumbnail for that post. A 3×3 profile puzzle requires nine separate posts (or nine separate Reels)—not nine files in one carousel.

Reels: 9:16 full screen vs profile thumbnail

Reels are built for 9:16 (for example 1080 × 1920). In full-screen playback, viewers see the full vertical frame.

On your profile grid, the same Reel is usually represented by a cover frame fitted into the same short, tall tile as photo posts—not the entire 9:16 canvas:

The grid behaves like a center crop (or center-weighted fit) that keeps roughly a 3:4 region from the cover.

Top and bottom of your 9:16 design are often hidden on the profile but can still appear when someone opens the Reel.

So if you place logos or faces near the top or bottom “safe for Reels” zone, they may vanish on the profile. For a connected grid, the slice that must align across nine tiles is that shared middle height—not the full 9:16 file edges.

Simple layout:

Put the puzzle composition in a 3:4-safe center (the part that must match neighbors on the grid).

Treat extra pixels above and below as Reels-only decoration (blur, color, or background)—optional in full screen, invisible on the grid.

Profile grid: how cropping feels in real workflows

Instagram has moved toward taller profile thumbnails (vertical tiles in the 3-column grid). Exact pixels vary by app version and account. Common surprises:

Thumbnail ≠ opened post. Judge a planned 9-tile grid from the profile grid view, not only from the full-screen post or Reel.

One ratio per puzzle. Mixing 3:4, 4:5, and square exports in the same connected set produces staggered rows and visible seam errors.

Do not start from raw 9:16 for a Feed-only grid. Compose in 3:4 (or plan 4:5 with deliberate side padding), then split—otherwise the grid crop is unpredictable.

Chronological order. On many accounts the newest post sits top-left. A full nine-tile grid is often published tile 1 first (bottom-right) through tile 9 last (top-left) so the image reads correctly—nine publishes in a row with nothing unrelated in between.

Quick reference: one file, three crops

9:16 Reels cover (full file)
┌────────────────────┐
│ often hidden on │ ← profile grid may clip
│ profile │
├────────────────────┤
│ │
│ ~3:4 “window” │ ← what neighbors must align in a 9-grid
│ (center stitch) │
│ │
├────────────────────┤
│ often hidden on │
│ profile │
└────────────────────┘
        ↓
   Full 9:16 when Reel plays

For 4:5 Post exports, the same idea applies horizontally: the profile emphasizes a center vertical strip; left/right padding may show in Feed but not in the thumbnail strip you need for alignment.

  Safe areas (simple numbers)

3:4 artwork: inset text, faces, and logos about 5% from each edge; keep critical content off 1/3 and 2/3 grid lines if you split into nine.

4:5 artwork shown on a 3:4-ish grid: keep heroes away from the left and right edges—many teams budget about 33 px per side on a 1080 px-wide export as a thumb rule.

9:16 Reels cover: assume top and bottom ~20% are at risk on the profile; keep the connecting puzzle in the middle 3:4.

Export sRGB JPEG at moderate quality (often around 80–85). Instagram recompresses; starting sharp and aligned matters more than oversized files.

When a 3×3 grid looks wrong (ratio checklist)

Carousel instead of nine posts — one tile on the profile.

Second crop in the app — pinch-zoom or switching to 1:1 after exporting prepared tiles.

Wrong publish order — the image reads mirrored or scrambled.

Mixed aspect ratios across the nine files.

Content on seams — faces or type split across tile boundaries.

Judging only the opened post — profile thumbnails tell the truth for the puzzle.

Figure 1 — Nine separate posts on the profile grid reading as one image (check thumbnails, not only opened posts).

  Summary

Post stills: think 4:5 in Feed, but 3:4-centered content for a tall profile grid.

Reels: think 9:16 in playback, but ~3:4 center on the profile cover.

One connected grid needs nine separate publishes, one consistent stitch ratio, and a final check in grid view.

Ratios and crops change with app updates. Treat the numbers here as production guidance, check on your own account before a client launch, and lay out for the profile thumbnail crop first when the grid is the point of the project.
