My Experience as Maintainer for Hacktoberfest 2021

October is the best month for me as an open source developer advocate as we celebrate the biggest open source event every year which is the Hacktoberfest.

Last year, I participated as a simple contributor to some of the open source projects and be able to complete the task and receive the limited edition Hacktoberfest 2020 Tee. 😎✨

☕ Motivation

After receiving the gift from the DigitalOcean, I plan that the next event (which is in 2021 / this year) I'll be a maintainer.

I was excited to become part of Hacktoberfest 2021 as a maintainer in the first day of October. I quickly setup all of my 40+ open source project so it will be ready for any contributions.

To get more contributions to my projects, I decided to participate on a local event in my country (Philippines) celebrating Hacktoberfest 2021. Hosted by PWA Pilipinas.

Basically, I share my experience as an open source developer advocate and guide the younger generations to love and care about open source software. The highlight of my talk is how I look and feel about open source.

Here's the highlight: "Your open source project is like having a child." you must care about it and grow it and everyone will love it.

💖 Overall Experience

The celebration gives us (open source developers) an opportunity to work on open source projects, maintain, and develop. My open source projects become active after months of being inactive. That's why I love this celebration, also I met different persons to work with, in addition I got my first JS.ORG subdomain name with the help of awesome contributors to my open source project.

We are currently working on this project: buymeacoffee.js.org. If you want to participate just check the issues and let me know.

Hacktoberfest is a big help to me as I maintain 40+ open source projects that needs attention and update.

GitHub Codespaces

Hello, fellow devs... I recently signed up for GitHub Codespaces and today I got the first beta experience of it. You know, I'm like a kid that got a new toy.

At the moment, you can only create 2 codespaces as a beta tester. You can now code on almost everywhere without having configuring on different workstations. This new GitHub feature is very promising it reminds me of cloud9.io a cloud IDE and now owned by AWS.

They have almost the same features but VSCode is even better on the cloud. It gives ease to all open-source developers who want to contribute instantly to a repository without having extra steps to set up locally.

Animate.css v4 Update!

Big announcement everyone, Animate.css v4 is finally released today!

Wait, what is Animate.css?

Animate.css is a library of ready-to-use, cross-browser animations for use in your web projects. Great for emphasis, home pages, sliders, and attention-guiding hints.

What's New?

In one word, "Many" in terms of new animations and improvements (a new website too). Also, be careful with this update... it has some breaking changes!

"Animate.css v4 brought some breaking changes, please refer to the migration guide before updating from v3.x and under."

An open-source curl-based command line tracker for coronavirus or covid-19 with historical chart.

Hello, I just wanna share my command line project with you. I created a program called COVID-19 Tracker CLI which is a curl-based and local command line tracker for pandemic coronavirus.

Great idea? For me no... it is a basic command line tracker just to track the cases around the world.

I want to know how wttr.in achieve this. If you curl that domain the result will show on your terminal. I'm curious, how to achieve this on my current domain name which serve a COVID-19 stats from terminal. May be you can help me to achieve this?

Coding Style?

When I code something I listen to music I love something like Electronic Pop Synth just to relax my brain to think faster and effectively. Also, sometimes I open a music video in a small screen so while coding I can watch. If you ask me if I can focus, yes I can! Without doing these things I can't code haha. What's yours?

What are the challenges you encounter while learning computer programming?

The challenges I encounter while learning computer programming is that I have no machine to start with I only use an android smartphone in learning programming. I browse websites for tutorial and watching videos. I even install some coding application to my first android phone so I can try what I learn. Eventually, that time I have enough knowledge to contribute to open source projects and one day, an employer wants to hire me at the age 18 years old to work as Junior Front End Developer.

When I get the job, I earn a decent amount of money to buy my first Laptop. When I get my Laptop that's the first time to continue the study in programming. Today, I have computers at home both laptop and desktop and still want to upgrade what I have.

I just wanna share my story to you guys! I start on a smaller screen into a bigger double computer monitor screen.

I wanna hear yours!
