Developers have exploited the Samsung Galaxy S9 and Note 9 to get root access on the Snapdragon models

Samsung phones sold in the U.S. are notoriously difficult to root. Samsung Knox makes rooting especially annoying, and it tends to break a lot of things if you do manage to get root. Users in the U.S. can’t even unlock the bootloader to root their devices in the first place. Every once in awhile, though, developers figure out an exploit that allows us to root. The Snapdragon Galaxy S7, Snapdragon Galaxy S8, and Snapdragon Galaxy Note 8 were possible to root using exploits, for example. The same developers behind the SamPWND exploit for the S8/Note 8 are back again with exploits that allow for root access on the Snapdragon Galaxy S9, Galaxy S9+ and Galaxy Note 9 — although there is a catch.

Samsung Galaxy S9 XDA Forums ||| Samsung Galaxy S9+ XDA Forums

Samsung Galaxy Note 9 XDA Forums

The catch is that rooting the Snapdragon Galaxy S9, Galaxy S9+ and Galaxy Note 9 requires a certain Android version being installed on the devices. Root isn’t available for the devices on the up-to-date firmware at this point in time. Currently, you are only able to root the Snapdragon Galaxy S9, Galaxy S9+ and Galaxy Note 9 if you’re running Android 8.0 or 8.1 Oreo. This is two major versions of Android behind the current release based on Android 10. You also need to be running what’s called a combination firmware — firmware that Samsung uses in the factory for testing. The combination firmware is the only reason root is possible, but it also has its own limitation: Flashing it will cap the battery charging to a max 80%, unfortunately. On the other hand, Samsung Knox is still working (because you aren’t unlocking the bootloader), so apps like Secure Folder or Samsung Pay continue to work. Plus, you get to keep your warranty in countries where software modifications may void it.

Another peculiarity with this root method for the Galaxy S9, Galaxy S9+, and Note 9 is that it does not use Magisk, meaning this isn’t systemless root. Instead, it’s using SuperSU. Since the bootloader is still locked, there is no way to patch the boot image for Magisk to work. So with SuperSU, we get an entirely system-based root solution. That also means that, unfortunately, SafetyNet Attestation will not pass, which means apps like Google Pay and Pokémon Go won’t work.

What’s more is that there is also no TWRP available due to Safestrap causing a kernel panic. You will also need to use a specific button combination every time you boot your phone to make sure to disable write protection. Fortunately, you can install the Xposed Framework. This allows for a lot of functionality and customization given the plethora of modules out there. Although most custom ROMs can’t be flashed because of the locked bootloader, it possible to install a GSI. The developers have already tested and booted an AOSP Android 9 Pie GSI on the Galaxy S9+, as shown below.

All the instructions you need have been posted in the forum posts linked below. The process requires some Odin flashing along with running some scripts from your computer and in the FlashFire app. Instructions for flashing the GSI are also linked in the forum post.

Root for Galaxy S9 (G960U/U1) ||| Root for Galaxy S9+ (G965U/U1) ||| Root for Galaxy Note 9 (N960U/U1)

We want to give a shout out to the developers behind the Extreme Syndicate root project. Team Syndicate is composed of XDA Recognized Developer/Retired Forum Moderator elliwigy, Recognized Contributor jrkruse, Senior Member klabit87, Senior Member me2151, and Member GSM-CHEN. They all spent countless hours working on getting root access for these devices.

Google is known for using cryptic puzzles as a way to announce the date of its annual Google I/O developer conference. Back in 2017, the search giant published an online brain teaser containing the dates of Google I/O 2017. The next year, the company shared a puzzle through the Google Developers Twitter account, which redirected users to the Google I/O 2018 website that had been turned into an escape room-style Google Maps Street View experience in a Google campus building. Last year, the company released another cryptic message to announce the dates for Google I/O 2019 and fans were expecting the company to share a similar enigma this year as well. However, it seems like Google has now given up on this annual ritual as the company’s CEO, Sundar Pichai, recently took to Twitter to announce the dates for Google I/O 2020.

Cosmos aligned. We’ll be back at Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View for this year’s #GoogleIO on May 12-14! pic.twitter.com/3bZqriaoi1

— Sundar Pichai (@sundarpichai) January 24, 2020

Pichai, who was appointed as the CEO of both Alphabet and Google towards the end of last year, shared a short GIF on the micro-blogging platform along with the dates for Google I/O 2020. As per his tweet, Google I/O will be held at the Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, California from May 12-14. At this year’s I/O developer conference, we expect Google to showcase the next major Android release — Android 11. Much like last year, the company is also expected to share new features and updates for its vast portfolio of apps. The company might also release new hardware, including an update for the Pixel 3a series which was showcased at the event last year.

The post Google I/O 2020 will take place from May 12-14 appeared first on xda-developers.

Thanks to our own Max Weinbach, this week has been chock full of Samsung Galaxy S20 leaks. We shared the first look at the Samsung Galaxy S20+ in real-life photos, posted thestock wallpapers for download, revealed the new camera features, and made some discoveries with a hands-on video. There was also news this week about the Galaxy S20 Ultra 5G, and now we can see the full specifications of the series.

As with most Samsung devices, there have been many rumors about the Galaxy S20 series. Going back to the beginning of November, we’ve been hearing rumored specifications and features, but we haven’t seen them all in one place. Today, Ishan Agarwal shared the full spec sheets for the Galaxy S20 Ultra 5G, Galaxy S20+ 5G, and Galaxy S20 5G. Let’s take a look.

The first thing to point out is that these are the European and Asian Galaxy S20 models, as they have the Exynos 990 processor. The Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 is expected to be in other regions. The other specifications should be the same across all markets. The AMOLED 120Hz displays are present, all coming in at 3200×1440. They also all have Dolby Atmos Stereo Speaker by AKG, microSD card slots, IP68 water resistance, and Android 10 with One UI 2.

Galaxy S20+ XDA Forums ||| Galaxy S20 XDA Forums

The differences start with the screen sizes. The Galaxy S20 5G has a 6.2-inch display, the Galaxy S20+ 5G is 6.7-inches, and the S20 Ultra is a whopping 6.9-inches. The Galaxy S20 and S20+ have 128GB of storage, while the S20 Ultra has 512GB. Battery size goes from 4,000mAh to 4500mAh to 5,000mAh.

Cameras are a big part of the Samsung Galaxy S20 series (both in size and importance). The Galaxy S20 Ultra 5G and S20+ 5G have four rear cameras, while the Galaxy S20 5G has three. The main camera on the S20 and S20+ is 12MP, while the main camera on the Ultra is 108MP. The telephoto camera on the S20+ and S20 is 64MP, while it’s 48MP on the Ultra. All three have a 12MP ultra-wide camera. The S20+ and Ultra have ToF cameras on the back. On the front, the S20+ and S20 feature 10MP selfie cameras, while the Ultra has a beastly 40MP camera.

One thing that we’re not seeing yet is pricing information. It will be interesting to see how big of a price gap there is between the 4G-only Galaxy S20 and the Galaxy S20 Ultra 5G. Thankfully, we have less than a month to wait before Samsung Unpacked on February 11th.

Chrome OS 80 introduces Android 10-like gesture navigation

Back in 2014, Google added Android app support on Chrome OS — the company’s light-weight operating system for more traditional computing form factors. Thanks to the Android app support, Chrome OS-powered machines weren’t just limited to web-based applications and users could enjoy their favorite Android applications on a larger device with keyboard and mouse support. Late last year, Chrome OS 80 was rolled out in the Dev channel and it added support for sideloading Android apps without Developer Mode. Now, Google is rolling out more new features in Chrome OS 80 as it hits the beta channel.

As reported by Android Police, Chrome OS 80 includes two more features ported over from Android — gesture navigation and multiple quick settings pages. In case you’re on the Chome OS beta channel, you can use the new gestures by enabling the modular shelf flag for Chrome. For those of you who already had this enabled in Chrome OS 79, the feature will disable itself following the update and you’ll have to turn it on again.

As seen in the video above, the gestures work quite a bit like the ones Google released with Android 10 and allow you to swipe up to go back to home, swipe from the sides to go back, and swipe up and hold to open the overview screen. However, the back gesture on Chrome OS only works on the left edge of the display. There’s an additional gesture that can be used to show the app dock and it requires users to swipe up a short distance quickly from the bottom of the screen. As of now, the old pull down from the top to go back to home gesture still works but we can’t be sure if it will be available when the update lands on the stable channel.

Along with the new navigation gestures, the Chrome OS 80 beta release also adds multiple quick settings pages to the platform. Unlike Android, however, you can’t change the order of the tiles or add custom tiles in quick settings. It’s worth noting that both these new features are currently a work in progress and Google might make some further changes before the build hits the stable channel.

Via: Android Police

Google News tests dark theme for articles and upvote/downvote buttons in the feed

Based on your interests and some machine learning, Google News provides you a curated feed of news articles crawled from different publications and blogs across the Internet. You can also subscribe to specific publishers or read more about a specific topic with a simple tap of a button. To put it simply, it’s a hub for all the news the average user may care about. The app is slowly being improved with new features; most recently, for example, the app gained the ability to let you view news articles in two languages. Soon, the app may add two new features to improve the reading experience: dark theme for articles and voting buttons to manually curate your feed.

An APK teardown can often predict features that may arrive in a future update of an application, but it is possible that any of the features we mention here may not make it in a future release. This is because these features are currently unimplemented in the live build and may be pulled at any time by the developers in a future build.

Dark Theme in WebView

Last year, Google News got a dark mode just like most other Google apps on the Play Store. However, this dark mode was confined mostly to the app’s own UI. Menus were displayed in dark colors, and so did some news articles as long as they were rendered natively by the app and not the Android system WebView. For articles that open in a WebView, the background color is still light. If you use the app to browse the news at night, then this can be annoying. In the near future, though, the app will open WebViews with a dark background. XDA’s Mishaal Rahman activated this feature manually in the latest version of the News app.

The AMP version of our website forced dark by the Google News app.

It’s likely this feature requires WebView versions based on Chromium builds that have the latest force dark mode code. Force dark mode in Chrome is still hit-and-miss, though, so it may take some time for this feature to roll out for users.

Voting in the Feed

Google is also planning to add an upvote/downvote function to the Google News app that takes the form of a thumbs up and a thumbs down. These will essentially help you curate your feed as you can easily tell the app which news sources/topics you like and which ones you don’t like.

Upvote/downvote buttons in the Google News app. Tapping the thumbs up will make the app show you similar stories, while the thumbs down button will indicate it that you don’t want to see content like this.

These features aren’t available yet for users and there’s no guarantee that they will become available anytime soon. However, given that they’re mostly complete, we expect them to become available to the wider public in a future version of the app.

Magisk is one of the best tools for Android users looking to unlock the full potential of their device. It’s a systemless interface developed by XDA Recognized Developer topjohnwu that can be used for everything from rooting your device to adding unique features to it. The best part about using it is that it allows users to tinker with system settings without actually making changes to system files. Another reason behind its popularity is its ability to bypass Google’s SafetyNet which prevents certain apps from running on rooted devices. Late last year, topjohnwu rolled out Magisk v20.1 along with Magisk Manager v7.4.0 featuring a couple of interesting updates to the interface. And now, they’ve released v20.2 which includes even more changes and bug fixes for both Magisk and Magisk Manager.

As per the release notes posted on our forums, the update brings improvements to the root request prompt, support for patching dtb/dtbo partition formats, support for pre-init sepolicy patch in modules, and a new module installer format which aims to make creating new modules easier. Here’s the official changelog for Magisk v20.2:

[MagiskSU] Properly handle communication between daemon and application (root request prompt)

[MagiskInit] Fix logging in kmsg

[MagiskBoot] Support patching dtb/dtbo partition formats

[General] Support pre-init sepolicy patch in modules

 - [Scripts] Update magisk stock image backup format

Magisk Manager

v7.5.0

Support new MagiskSU communication method (ContentProvider)

Fix several issues with hidden stub APK

Support using BiometricPrompt (face unlock)

For more information on the pre-init sepolicy patches for modules and the new module installer format, you can visit the GitHub source linked below. If you’re interested in creating new Magisk modules with the updated installer format, you can follow topjohnwu’s guide on how to use the new module template.

Over the last couple of months, Realme has done a fantastic job of releasing timely security updates for its devices. Following the rollout of the Android security patches for December 2019 early last month, the company rolled out updates for the Realme 1, U1, 3 Pro, XT, C2, 5 Pro, and Realme X with the December 2019 patches along with some minor changes to the OS. Now, the company has started rolling out updates for the Realme 5 and Realme 5s.

ColorOS on Realme devices will soon let you disable content recommendations

Over the last couple of years, a couple of Chinese OEMs have completely disrupted the market by offering devices with amazing hardware at an unbelievable price. While these manufacturers do take some obvious cost-cutting measures to reach the desired price point, they also make use of other methods to generate more revenue. These include system-wide ads that pop-up just about everywhere in the OS and do nothing but tarnish the user experience. Both Xiaomi and Realme are guilty of pushing such ads or promotions on their respective Android skins — MIUI and ColorOS — but the companies have been taking measures to make the experience a bit less obnoxious for users.

Earlier this year, we learned that Xiaomi was working to get rid of some ads in MIUI and give users a new setting to turn off all ads in the system apps. Now, Realme is following the same path and has revealed plans to add a similar feature in ColorOS. According to a recent post on the Realme community forums, the company will be adding a new toggle in an upcoming update for ColorOS 6 which will allow users to completely disable content recommendations. The toggle will effectively turn off all store recommendations that pop-up in the notifications panel or other parts of the OS and give users a better experience.

The post states that the company is adding new commercial content recommendations in the OS which will appear in two places — the Phone Manager app and the Security Check page. The content recommendations will be turned on by default, but users will get the option to turn them off from within the device settings. To turn off recommendations, users will have to navigate to the new Get Recommendations option in the Additional Settings and turn off the toggle labeled Receive app and content recommendations. As of now, it isn’t clear if disabling content recommendations will also disable notifications from the Theme Store and the App Market.

Source: Realme

The post ColorOS on Realme devices will soon let you disable content recommendations appeared first on xda-developers.

OnePlus opens up a bug bounty program called the OnePlus Security Response Center

Cybersecurity is more important than ever as we go into a new decade that is sure to, again, radically change technology as we know it. And no matter how huge your developer team is or how thoroughly you test your software, some critical vulnerabilities and bugs still manage to cross the pond to stable software a lot of the time. This is why several companies, including Samsung, Google, and Huawei, have bug bounty programs that allow security researchers to have a go with the company’s software and walk away with a very generous amount of cash if they manage to find any critical exploit. OnePlus is now joining this list of companies, as they promised earlier this year.

OnePlus has unveiled its own bug bounty program, which they are calling the OnePlus Security Response Center, or OneSCR for short. The premise is simple: If you (properly) find a vulnerability, you can get money in exchange for (properly) reporting it. The opening of this program comes nearly two years after the company disclosed a security breach in its payment portal, and one month after they disclosed a breach of customer data in the OnePlus Store.

This bug bounty program is a bit different compared to the equivalents from other companies, though, and this is because of payout amounts. While other companies are willing to offer several hundred thousand dollars for a very critical security vulnerability, OnePlus is offering up to $7,000 for what it deems to be the most critical threats, while smaller bugs will go as low as $50-$100. The Submission Policy page clarifies OnePlus’ stance on responsible/coordinated disclosure, account interaction, disallowed attack methods, ineligible issues, and finally, the payments.

Here’s the reward tier list:

 Special cases: up to $7,000

 Critical: $750 – $1,500

 High: $250 – $750

 Medium: $100 – $250

 Low: $50 – $100

While $7,000 is a decent sum for some people, it is a very far cry from what other companies offer. With a company of OnePlus’ size and scope – they’ve grown a lot larger since they launched the OnePlus One 5 years back – you’d expect payouts for such a program to be just a bit more generous. Nonetheless, we hope the program will help to improve the security of OnePlus products. You can submit bug reports here.

OnePlus also says they will collaborate with HackerOne, a hacker-powered bug bounty platform, to launch a pilot program in 2020, inviting select security researchers to test their systems against potential threats.

Source: OnePlus

The post OnePlus opens up a bug bounty program called the OnePlus Security Response Center appeared first on xda-developers.

Back at Google I/O 2019 earlier this year, the company first showcased the all-new faster Google Assistant. Over the next couple of months, we saw numerous leaks that gave us a clearer picture of what to expect from the updated Assistant. Back in October, we also saw a new compact UI for setting reminders with the Assistant and shortly thereafter, Google finally rolled out the next-gen Assistant with the launch of the Pixel 4 series. However, the updated Assistant only worked in the US at the time of launch. An APK teardown of the Google app revealed strings of code that suggests that the Assistant will make its way to other regions. And now, the company has finally rolled out the new Assistant in 5 more locales.

According to a recent post on the Google Assistant Help forums, the next-gen Assistant is now available in English in 5 new regions, including Canada, United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, and Singapore. The current release falls in line with the information we previously gathered from the APK teardown. Following the rollout, users in these regions will be able to use all the new features Google released for the new Assistant, including faster response times, real-time transcriptions, and offline operation. Users will also be able to make use of the Assistant to perform actions in other Google apps like Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Maps, YouTube and Google Photos. Sadly though, the new Assistant is still limited to the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL, with no word from the company regarding a wider rollout.

Samsung says it has sold 1 million Galaxy Fold devices

The Samsung Galaxy Fold is undoubtedly one of the most interesting phones of 2019. There is no arguing it is a breathtaking phone that truly represents what the future will hold. That bleeding-edge tech comes at a price, though, retailing at $1,980 in the US, it’s one of the most expensive phones on the market. However, this didn’t stop customers from buying it. Today at TechCrunch Disrupt in Berlin, Samsung Electronic’s President Young Sohn announced that they have sold 1,000,000 units of the Galaxy Fold.

This is an insane amount of sales for a device that had a well-documented rocky start. It was announced at Samsung Unpacked 2019 in San Francisco and between the announcement and launch, there were a lot of questions about the durability of the phone. Once it got into the hands of reviewers, those concerns were justified. After about 2 days, they started to break. This wasn’t a good sign for the future of foldables. After these issues, Samsung made the right decision and indefinitely delayed the Galaxy Fold. After 6 months of re-engineering the device, they finally released it in its current form, the fixed Galaxy Fold.

After all the issues and bad press, it’s crazy to think Samsung has sold 1,000,000 Galaxy Fold units. This might not seem like a lot compared to the total Samsung sells per quarter, but the difference is in the tech and price. In Q1 of 2019, Samsung reportedly sold about 78 million phones. From March 2019 to May 2019, Samsung sold 16 million Galaxy S10s. In comparison, it seems like a very small number of Folds being sold.

Well, when you think about the launch problems, launch regions, price, and availability, it just becomes more impressive. The Galaxy Fold has been launching in different regions slowly over the past 4 months. The price is also insanely high. It cost $1,980 for the LTE Galaxy Fold in the US. In other regions, the price goes up even more because of 5G or VAT. As for availability, it has been sold out in almost every store since it launched. It sold out in the US within a matter of minutes, and it’s still sold out in most places. Out of all of this, Samsung has managed to sell 1,000,000 units.

Galaxy Fold XDA Forums

With all the problems and naysayers, this is a pretty impressive launch for the Galaxy Fold. We know Samsung is moving full-speed ahead on new foldable phones and the market is likely to follow them. Are you excited about this form factor?

Source: TechCrunch

Google announces Flutter 1.12 with support for web, macOS, and more

Google has been hard at work creating and expanding Flutter for the past few years. In case you think I’m talking about butterflies, Flutter is a cross-platform programming language. Its goal is to allow you to develop apps for any major platform with a single codebase. All you need to learn is Dart/JavaScript, and you can develop for Android, iOS, web, and desktop. This is no small feat, so it probably won’t surprise you when I say that Flutter, until now, has really only supported Android and iOS. Sure, that’s a lot of people for a target audience, but it doesn’t include everyone. Today, Google is announcing quite a few things, including expanded platform support.

First up is macOS support. While Flutter has actually technically supported macOS, Windows, and Linux for a while now, these libraries were basically in pre-alpha mode. APIs could change without notice, things might break, etc. Starting today, macOS is no longer in this pre-alpha stage. While it’s not quite stable yet, it should be safe to use for development. Continuing on the theme of platform support, Flutter Web is now in beta. Before, it was in a similar state to the desktop frameworks. Now, though, it should be stable enough to begin any pre-production work you might have had planned.

Unfortunately, that’s it for new platform support. Windows and Linux are still in very early development, and there’s no news on anything outside the Mobile OS Duopoly. Platform expansion isn’t the only thing that’s new, though.

Google has put a large focus on design with Flutter. The goal is to make it easier for designers and developers to work together, by improving the flow of integrating animations and graphics into apps. On that thread, Google is announcing a partnership with Adobe to bring Flutter integration to Adobe XD. With this integration, it’s possible to export a design from Adobe XD straight into a format that can be used inside a Flutter app.

The last thing to mention involves the language that Flutter uses: Dart. Dart now supports extension functions. Extension functions, in essence, allow you to add a method to a class without actually modifying the class. For more details, see this article on Dart Extension Methods Fundamentals.

That’s about it this time around. While this isn’t exactly an extensive list of new features, they’re all pretty major additions to Flutter and the development flow of using it. If you’ve been curious about trying out Flutter, but it wasn’t available in your preferred environment (and your preferred environment is macOS or web), now’s the time to get started.

The post Google announces Flutter 1.12 with support for web, macOS, and more appeared first on xda-developers.
