10 Commandments for Programmers

Do your best to follow these 10 commandments 👇🏽

Make Googling a habit or thou shalt make very little progress in programming.
If it works, do not touch it unless you know what you are doing.
JavaScript might be well spoken of but it is not your friend.
Never debug in production.
Argue not about programming languages on Twitter.
Do not claim you know CSS. It is a lie, we all know.
Eat in the morning before you start programming. Otherwise you may not eat again.
No matter how sure you are, always clear your browser cache and try again.
It is easier to stay up till 6:00 AM than to wake up at 6:00 AM. Be discipline with your sleep cycle.
Always hide your wifi network SSID. There are others who are more dangerous than you think.

Compiling php/php-src source on macOS BigSur

𝗗𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗸 𝗔𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗶 🐬 — Thu, 27 May 2021 09:47:07 +0000

Compiling PHP source code (master) on macOS (BigSur) wasn't very smooth because of mainly unavailable packages on my OS, and because of some Mac restriction on upgrading software or tools.

After cloning the php/php-src to my localhost, I had to run the ./buildconf script, and then ./configure --enable-debug executable.

Like all software compile processes will be, I ran into some issues/blockers which I'll document about below.

bison (the GNU parser generator) was pinned to 2.3 on my system, and I couldn't upgrade and re-link with brew. I had to custom install bison (using brew upgrade bison) version > 3.0 which is what php-src needs for parsing PHP.

When I finished installing version 3.7.6 which is above the required version, on trying to link via brew, I get:

Since bison is key-only, we can't update the version shipped by macOS (a bit annoying) but I had to export (see image above) the libraries of the latest install of bison so compilers (in this case GCC) can find them, and then ran the ./configure --enable-debug script again.

This time, with the latest libraries from bison 3.7.6, it worked.

The next issue I ran into was a missing package called re2c (which is used to compile regex to code). This is similar to the issue encountered in bullet 1, so I just installed the package brew install re2c.

Once I did the above, I ran the ./configure --enable-debug script again and it worked.

NOTE: re2c is not key-only, so, after installation, the necessary libraries are exported by brew.

Well, that's not all, I met another issue with libiconv which is a conversion library to convert from/to Unicode.

I installed libiconv using brew as such: brew install libiconv, and notice in the Caveats info that it's key-only.

After installing, I had to export executables to PATH & libraries so compilers could see these.

On trying to re-run ./configure again, I got hit with another issue which is related to libiconv 👇🏽

So, this time, I needed to use an option to run the configurations with: --with-config=<DIR>, and the command: ./configure --enable-debug --with-iconv=/usr/local/opt/libiconv/.

This worked smoothly, and I made progress

Now I had to compile PHP using make -j8 (as my computer has 8 cores), wish me luck! ☺️ Hey, it compiled successfully:

NOTE: I first of all ran make which was using by default only 1 core and this was already taking more than 2 mins. I had to change it to make -j8 which was using all my CPU's 8 cores at once, and the compile process took less than 40sec.

Now I just have to run make TEST_PHP_ARGS=-j8 test which ran really fast was it was using all 8 cores at once

All tests ran, and I'm ready to start contributing code to PHP core. Hope this helps you configure, and compile PHP on your macOS.

Issue starting up Apache after upgrading to PHP 8 on macOS

𝗗𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗸 𝗔𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗶 🐬 — Tue, 22 Dec 2020 17:00:13 +0000

Upgraded your PHP from 7 to 8 on your macOS, then you might run into issues trying to start Apache when you run the command: sudo apachectl start.

The issue is, the dynamic link library of PHP for PHP 8 has been changed and is saved in a different location on your macOS file system.

After upgrading to PHP 8, you will need to comment out the config line for PHP 7 similar to what is below in the file:

sudo nano /usr/local/etc/httpd/httpd.conf

The line:

#LoadModule php7_module /usr/libexec/apache2/libphp7.so

and then copy/paste the line below to link to the correct PHP 8 DLL:

LoadModule php_module /usr/local/lib/httpd/modules/libphp.so

Also, note that the module name is not php7_module but php_module.

After doing this, try to start/restart apache again. Hope this helps!

Upgrading applications on macOS using homebrew

𝗗𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗸 𝗔𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗶 🐬 — Wed, 16 Sep 2020 15:45:04 +0000

Installing and upgrading applications on macOS using homebrew is really easy. I'm a big fan of homebrew and I mostly use it to install my applications and also upgrade all applications on my system.

In this article, you'll learn the command I use to upgrade my applications (system wide) using the brew tool.

First of all, you'll need to install brew on your system. Follow this official brew website to get the installation of brew up and running on your Mac.

Once that is done, your applications can now be upgraded but before running the command just yet, check your system to make sure there are no broken packages using:

brew doctor

If the above command says your system is ready to brew, then run the below command to upgrade your system's applications:

brew upgrade

It'll take a while for all applications to upgrade depending on how many applications you've used brew to install. Hope you learned something.

On April 8 2020, I wanted to share BrenDt's article on what to expect in PHP 8 (new features) on my Twitter time-line then a quick question came into my mind: "Is there an available list of top PHP developers one can follow on Twitter?". Tried searching online but came up with a resource[1], but if YOU reading this small article find a list or know a PHP Developer on Twitter, please share in the comment section.

PHP is an active community and maybe in the future people can start asking a similar question to follow active top PHP developer accounts on Twitter (if that question isn't already crossing in the minds of people now).
