How I Used Bitwarden to Securely Share Hashnode Login Credentials

As I continue learning and working in the tech field, I have been learning not only how to build websites and applications, but also how to handle account credentials securely.

Recently, I was introduced to Bitwarden, a password manager that can also be used to securely share sensitive information. In this article, I will share my experience creating a Bitwarden account and using Bitwarden Send to share Hashnode login credentials with a colleague.

Creating my Bitwarden account

The first step is to create an account on Bitwarden.

Navigate to the Bitwarden website and start the sign-up process. Enter your email address and create my account.

After signing up, Bitwarden will send a verification email to your email inbox. Open the email and click the verification link to verify your email address.

According to Bitwarden’s documentation, email verification is part of the account creation process and helps unlock certain features. (Bitwarden)

Then completed the account setup by creating your Bitwarden Master Password.

Signing in to Bitwarden

After creating the account, login to Bitwarden using my email address and Master Password.

Once you have signed in, You can access my Bitwarden vault and the different features available to me.

One feature that caught my attention was Bitwarden Send.

Using Bitwarden Send

Bitwarden Send allows users to securely share encrypted information through a generated link.

Instead of sending someone’s login credentials directly through a normal chat message, You can put the information into a Bitwarden Send and share the generated link instead.

Select Send and create a new Send.

Adding the Hashnode login credentials

For this exercise, I needed to share the login credentials for a Hashnode account with my colleague.

Enter the required login information into the Send.

Make sure to treat the credentials as sensitive information because usernames, passwords and other login details should not be casually shared through ordinary messages.

Generating and sharing the link

After entering the information, save the Send.

Bitwarden will generate a unique link for the Send. Copied that link and share

The important thing I learned here is that I didn’t have to send the actual credentials directly through a normal messaging platform. Instead, I shared the Bitwarden Send link.

The recipient can open the link to access the information, depending on the security settings I selected when creating the Send. Bitwarden also allows additional protections such as passwords, access limits and email verification. (Bitwarden)

What I learned

This was a simple exercise, but it taught me an important lesson about handling sensitive information.

Before using Bitwarden, I might have thought that sending a username and password through a normal chat was convenient enough. However, learning about tools such as Bitwarden Send showed me that there are safer ways to share sensitive information.

I also learned that cybersecurity is not only about protecting large systems. It can start with small everyday habits, such as how we share our passwords.

Conclusion

Creating my Bitwarden account and using Bitwarden Send to share Hashnode credentials was one of the practical security lessons I have experienced while learning in the tech field.

The process was straightforward:

Create a Bitwarden account → Verify my email → Sign in → Create a Bitwarden Send → Add the sensitive information → Generate a secure link → Share the link with the intended recipient.

As I continue developing my skills in WordPress and web development, I am also learning that being a good developer involves more than writing code. Understanding how to handle information securely is equally important.

This was a small step, but definitely a useful one in my learning journey.
