Disclosure: This article contains an affiliate link to UR Founders. I am an independent referral partner and may earn a commission if you purchase through it.

You have built a product, found your first international customers, and are ready to charge. Before choosing a payment provider or registering a company abroad, map out how your business will actually receive money.

 1. Separate customer payments from payouts

A customer paying by card is one step. The provider transferring your proceeds to an eligible account is another. Check the currencies your customers can pay in, the settlement currency, payout destinations, conversion charges and payout timing. A provider that accepts a customer’s card may still have specific requirements for your business and payout account.

 2. Check eligibility before integrating

Ask each provider whether it supports your business location, ownership structure and product category. A subscription SaaS, a marketplace and a digital-goods store can face different reviews. Check identity and business documentation requirements directly with the provider, and be truthful about where the business operates.

 3. Design for the entire subscription lifecycle

For recurring billing, assess subscription APIs, webhooks, failed-payment retries, cancellations, refunds, disputes and customer support. Verify webhook signatures and make event processing idempotent so a repeated event does not grant access twice. Test renewals, failed charges and cancellations in the provider’s sandbox before launch.

 4. Compare total cost and operational risk

Look beyond the headline processing rate. Ask about fixed transaction fees, currency conversion, disputes, reserves, settlement delays and refund policies. Estimate the effect on a realistic subscription price and customer mix. Review your site’s billing, cancellation and refund terms before submitting an application.

 5. Decide whether a foreign entity fits your plan

A US company can be relevant if you are building a genuine US business or have other concrete reasons for a US presence. It is not automatically needed to accept international payments. Compare available options in your home country first, and consider formation costs, annual maintenance, tax and reporting obligations with qualified advisers in the relevant countries. Forming an LLC does not guarantee a bank account or processor approval.

For founders evaluating US formation, UR Founders describes company-formation services and, depending on the package and availability, support for banking and payment applications. Before purchasing, ask for the exact scope, first-year and renewal costs, eligibility and what help is available if an application is declined.

 Useful starting points

Stripe: global availability — check supported business locations and current availability.

Shopify: payment gateway availability — relevant if your product or store uses Shopify.

Stripe: webhook best practices — verify events and plan for retries.

What was the first payment issue you had to solve when selling your product internationally?
