Mojo Media: turning a quality expectation into a website

Mojo Media came to me with multiple podcasts, a collection of ideas and a clear expectation: the website needed to look excellent. They knew the standard they wanted, but they did not yet know what the site should look like.

That is a useful starting point. A client can understand the quality they want without having a finished design brief. My job is to help turn that expectation into something they can see and respond to.

 From ideas to mockups

I led the project and presented several mockups. The client liked the directions I showed them. Instead of trying to describe a website in the abstract, we had something concrete in front of us.

I then built the site using HTML, CSS and JavaScript. The client requested no revisions. That is my account of the feedback on this project; it is not a claim about traffic, sales or conversion rates.

What stays with me is the starting point: they already had the podcasts and ideas. They needed help bringing them together into a website that met their expectations.

Start with what the business already has

I often hear clients say they have nothing to work with. Then we start talking, and there is much more there than they realized: content, a community, previous sales, a process or a distinctive way of doing business.

I like to listen for those strengths before deciding how to present them. A website becomes more useful when it makes something specific about the business clear.

For Mojo Media, the existing podcasts were part of that starting point. On other projects, the strongest material might be a performer’s reels, a community’s courses or the story behind a service.

Three questions I come back to

What do you want a visitor to see?
What do you want them to experience?
What do you want them to do next?

These questions help me decide what deserves attention. They are useful when a client has lots of material and when a client believes they have very little. In either case, the work is to find the message and give it a clear place.

Mockups make that conversation concrete. They let a client react to an actual direction before the finished website is in front of them.

The lesson I take from Mojo Media is simple: a client does not need to arrive knowing the design solution. A clear sense of the quality they want, together with the material they already have, gives us something to build on.

More of my work: https://zevhecht.com/

Disclosure: This article was prepared with AI assistance from my firsthand project notes and checked against those notes.
