How a free, open-source plugin helps developers, privacy professionals, and SMBs tackle GDPR tasks directly inside Claude Code.

Data protection compliance is often seen as a legal exercise rather than a development workflow. Yet modern teams increasingly need to address privacy concerns while building products, reviewing code, handling customer data, and responding to incidents.

Recently, I came across GDPR Compliance Skills, a free and open-source plugin from GDPRGard that extends Claude Code with GDPR-focused capabilities. The project aims to help developers and organizations perform common GDPR assessment and documentation tasks directly within their AI-assisted workflow.

What Is GDPR Compliance Skills?

GDPR Compliance Skills is a plugin for Claude Code that provides a collection of specialized GDPR-related skills and commands. Rather than starting from a blank page whenever a compliance task appears, users can invoke dedicated workflows designed around specific GDPR requirements.

The plugin is released under the MIT license and is available as a free, open-source project.

Included GDPR Skills

The plugin currently includes seven specialized compliance skills:

DPIA (Data Protection Impact Assessment)

This skill helps determine whether a DPIA may be required under Article 35 GDPR and can generate a draft DPIA document.

Useful for:

New products processing personal data
AI systems
Large-scale monitoring activities
High-risk processing operations

ROPA (Record of Processing Activities)

Managing Article 30 records can quickly become tedious. This skill helps build or audit a Record of Processing Activities.

Useful for:

GDPR documentation
Internal audits
Compliance reviews
DPO support activities

Privacy Policy Review

A dedicated skill reviews privacy policies against the transparency requirements found in GDPR Articles 12-14.

Useful for:

Website launches
Privacy policy updates
Compliance gap analysis

Cookie & Tracker Audit

Cookies remain one of the most visible privacy compliance areas. This skill audits:

Cookies
Trackers
Consent mechanisms
Cookie banners

to identify potential compliance concerns.

Data Processing Agreement Review

Organizations frequently rely on third-party providers and processors. This skill reviews Data Processing Agreements (DPAs) against GDPR Article 28 requirements and can draft redline suggestions.

Breach Response

When incidents happen, speed matters. The breach response skill guides teams through GDPR breach handling requirements, including notification considerations related to Articles 33 and 34.

DSAR Response

Handling Data Subject Access Requests can consume significant operational time. This skill supports requests associated with rights under Articles 15-22, including:

Access requests
Erasure requests
Rectification requests
Other data subject rights workflows

Two Built-In Commands

In addition to the individual skills, the plugin includes two commands:

/gdprgard-compliance:gdpr-check

Runs a prioritized compliance review against a file or folder.

Potential use cases:

Reviewing application code
Auditing project documentation
Checking privacy-related assets before release
/gdprgard-compliance:breach

Starts a breach-response workflow for a reported incident.

Why This Matters for Developers

Privacy compliance is often treated as something that happens after development. In reality, many GDPR requirements intersect directly with engineering decisions:

Data collection practices
Log retention
Analytics implementation
Third-party integrations
User account management
Security incident handling

Having privacy-focused skills available inside a coding assistant can make compliance reviews more accessible during development rather than after deployment.

An Important Disclaimer

One aspect I appreciated is the project's clear positioning. GDPRGard explicitly states that these skills generate drafts and checklists and are not legal advice. The outputs should be reviewed by a qualified professional, DPO, or legal advisor before being relied upon.

This is an important distinction. AI can accelerate compliance work, but accountability and legal interpretation remain human responsibilities.

Privacy-First Approach

According to the project description, GDPRGard does not receive the documents, code, or websites analyzed through the plugin. The plugin operates as a set of instructions running inside the user's Claude Code session.

For organizations dealing with sensitive information, this architectural approach may be more attractive than solutions that require uploading documents to external services.

Final Thoughts

The GDPR Compliance Skills plugin represents an interesting trend: bringing compliance workflows closer to where developers actually work.

Instead of treating GDPR as a separate documentation exercise, tools like this help integrate privacy reviews, documentation, audits, and incident response into day-to-day development practices.

Will it replace privacy professionals or legal counsel? Certainly not.

Can it help teams generate first drafts, identify compliance gaps, and streamline repetitive tasks? Absolutely.

As privacy regulations continue to evolve, developer-friendly compliance tooling is becoming less of a luxury and more of a necessity.

⭐ Support the Project

Projects like GDPR Compliance Skills help bridge the gap between development and compliance, making GDPR more approachable for teams of all sizes.

If you find the project useful:

⭐ Star the repository
🐛 Report issues or suggest improvements
🤝 Contribute new compliance skills
📢 Share it with your developer and privacy communities

Open-source privacy tooling thrives on community involvement. Whether you're a developer, privacy professional, security practitioner, or founder, your feedback and contributions can help make privacy-first development more accessible for everyone.

What GDPR-related tasks would you like to automate or simplify with AI? Share your thoughts in the comments. 🚀

How AI Accelerated the Development of GDPR Compliance Software:

Building GDPR compliance software has traditionally required extensive legal research, complex engineering, and countless hours spent translating regulatory requirements into practical workflows. Today, AI-assisted development is changing that process dramatically.

Over the past year, I've been building GDPR compliance tools using Claude Code, leveraging AI to accelerate coding, documentation, architecture design, testing, and product development. The result is faster iteration, better software quality, and more time spent solving real compliance challenges rather than repetitive development tasks.

In this article, I'll explain how Claude Code helps me build GDPR compliance products and why AI-powered development is becoming an essential advantage for compliance-focused startups.

Why GDPR Compliance Software Is Challenging to Build

The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is one of the world's most comprehensive privacy regulations. Organizations operating in Europe must manage numerous compliance obligations, including:

Privacy policies
Data inventories
Data processing records
Consent management
Data subject requests
Vendor assessments
Security documentation
Risk assessments
Data breach procedures

Building software that simplifies these requirements is far from straightforward.

Developers must translate legal requirements into intuitive workflows while ensuring accuracy, scalability, and security. Every feature requires careful consideration because compliance software influences how businesses manage sensitive personal data.

This is where AI-assisted development becomes incredibly valuable.

Why I Chose Claude Code

Claude Code has become a core part of my development workflow because it understands large codebases, maintains context effectively, and produces high-quality code and technical documentation.

Instead of using AI merely for code snippets, I use it as a development partner throughout the entire software lifecycle.

Some examples include:

Architectural planning
Database design
API development
Frontend implementation
Unit testing
Refactoring
Security reviews
Documentation generation
Bug fixing

This allows me to move from concept to production-ready feature significantly faster.

Building GDPR Tools with Claude Code

Generating Compliance Workflows

One of the biggest advantages of Claude Code is its ability to help transform regulatory requirements into technical workflows.

For example, when building modules for:

GDPR assessments
Data mapping
Record of Processing Activities (RoPA)
Data Subject Access Requests (DSAR)
Vendor risk management

Claude Code can help structure business logic and suggest implementation approaches that align with compliance objectives.

Rather than starting from a blank page, I begin with a working framework that can be refined and validated.

Accelerating Backend Development

Compliance platforms typically require substantial backend functionality, including:

Authentication systems
Role-based permissions
Audit logs
API integrations
Data storage layers
Notification workflows

Claude Code speeds up development by generating clean boilerplate code, explaining architectural tradeoffs, and helping maintain consistency across the project.

This enables faster feature delivery without sacrificing maintainability.

Creating Documentation Automatically

Documentation is critical in compliance software.

Users need guidance, administrators need configuration instructions, and organizations need evidence of how systems operate.

Claude Code helps generate:

Technical documentation
API references
User guides
Product specifications
Security documentation
Internal development notes

This dramatically reduces the time spent writing and updating documentation manually.

Improving Code Quality

As GDPR platforms grow, maintaining code quality becomes increasingly important.

Claude Code assists with:

Code reviews
Refactoring recommendations
Performance improvements
Test coverage analysis
Error detection

By identifying potential issues early, AI helps reduce technical debt and improve long-term scalability.

Developing GDPRGard with AI Assistance

A practical example of this approach is the development of GDPRGard, an AI-powered GDPR compliance platform designed for European small and medium-sized businesses.

When building compliance management systems like GDPRGard, many components require significant planning:

Compliance assessments
Risk evaluations
Documentation generation
Regulatory workflows
User dashboards
Automation engines

Claude Code helps accelerate the development of these components while allowing human expertise to remain at the center of regulatory interpretation and product decisions.

AI handles repetitive engineering tasks while I focus on product strategy, compliance expertise, and customer needs.

AI Does Not Replace Compliance Expertise

One important lesson is that AI should not replace legal or compliance knowledge.

Claude Code is an excellent development assistant, but GDPR interpretation still requires human judgment.

Compliance software builders must:

Validate regulatory requirements
Review generated code
Verify legal accuracy
Test security controls
Ensure user-facing content is correct

AI increases productivity, but accountability remains with the developer and compliance team.

The Future of Compliance Software Development

The future of compliance technology will likely be built by teams that effectively combine human expertise with AI-powered development.

Tools such as Claude Code enable developers to:

Build faster
Reduce repetitive work
Improve productivity
Ship features more quickly
Focus on higher-value decisions

For founders and developers working in privacy, security, and compliance, AI-assisted development is becoming a major competitive advantage.

Final Thoughts

Building GDPR compliance tools using Claude Code has transformed the way I develop software. From generating workflows and writing backend code to creating documentation and improving quality assurance, AI has become an invaluable part of my process.

While regulatory expertise and human oversight remain essential, AI-powered development enables faster innovation and more efficient product creation.

As compliance requirements continue to grow across Europe and beyond, tools like Claude Code will play an increasingly important role in helping developers build reliable, scalable, and user-friendly compliance solutions.

Learn the Claude Code Workflow Behind These GDPR Tools

Many of the strategies used to build GDPR compliance software, automate documentation, generate features, and accelerate development are covered in my book, Mastering Claude Code.
