I've been super interested in building both a battlestation and a small homelab for a while now. Hardware is a very foreign place for me but I really like tinkering with my hands as much as possible.

On the homelab front, I'm not exactly sure what I'd like to do with it which is my blocker from really moving forward with it. I have an old laptop that I'd like to cannibalize into something (not sure that's the best first approach but it's what I've been thinking of) but I don't really have any idea where else to start. Do you have any recommendations for an easy/small first step to take towards homelab-type projects?
