Happy Friday everyone!

I've just started at a new job which means ... adding in my favourite custom Slack emojis.

Do you have any favourites you can't live without?

At my job, we use the party parrot a lot. My favorite version is the one with my manager face on it.

I love the parrot, and that the parrot is from New Zealand - mashable.com/2017/07/13/cult-of-th...

Then everyone should take a look at the cult of the party parrot to bulk download them

Oh definitely! I have to confess I added the :partyparrot: emoji to our Slack when I joined my current job. It only snowballed from there and now we have tons of them!

I invite you to download a bulk slack emoji importer and import 250 of them. I might have done this at some point...

when I worked at a marketing agency I added like... ALL of the party parrot GIFs. They were by far the most frequently used. I missed the party parrot at my next job, which used Google Chat.

The parrot seems to be everyone’s favourite, with good reason :)

I have a few star wars emojis I like to bring with me: Yoda, Darth Vader, the Death Star, and a lightsaber.

Also, I don't bring this one with me anymore, but I had added the still of Picard facepalming in the first Slack group I joined, before the standard emoji set had facepalms.

The Picard facepalm is a great go-to!

It's my favorite. Even with the actual facepalm emojis, the Picard facepalm is still the best.

The coolest thing you can do is ask your fellow employees to drop pictures of their pets and then create emojis based on those! (cc' @mariocsee who did this for us at DEV!)

And come on, you didn't think I was going to say this without showing off the emojis of my pets!

That's such a great idea! I've seen emojis of team faces, but never pet faces

Before air power came into its own in World War 2, an outgunned navy could deny an enemy control over a region by maintaining a "fleet in being". The ships all stay safe in port and avoid battle, but of course the opposing admiral doesn't know how long that state of affairs will last. They have to consider the possibility of battle, deploy their own fleets accordingly, and therefore lose at least local control of the tempo of warfare.

Similarly the existence of :codd: isn't valuable for how frequently he gets deployed, it's in the fact that he could be deployed. Look at that glower!

I think my team uses these two the most:

  • :disappear: - Homer Simpson backing away through a bush
  • :notit: - President Obama with his finger on his nose

Tangentially, I was thinking this week that there's a need for standard emojis for common Australian idioms like "no worries" and "she'll be right".
