Warming Up to DEV as a Content Platform

I've got to admit something. I was skeptical of DEV.to. I was skeptical for a long time. Having been burned by many other content platforms which had come and usually goneβ€”most recently Medium (which hasn't gone…yet…)β€”I was completely on the Own-Your-Own-Content bandwagon. DEV seemed like yet another solution in search of a problem.

But some time has gone by, the DEV community has grown by leaps and bounds, and many steps the company itself has taken (such as open sourcing the platform itself!) has proven that They Get Developers. They've got our back. And so now I've got theirs.

I still believe in the philosophy of Own-Your-Own-Content which is why generally every post I publish here has a canonical URL elsewhere. But I really appreciate the distribution and reach that content enjoys here, and it's fun to discover other developers and see what they're working on or what questions they may have.

I'm quite excited to see what's in store for this community, Forem, and the future of dev blogging. Feels like we have nowhere to go but up.

That's great to hear. We're really trying hard to position the whole ecosystem to work for as many people as possible and offer a solid foundation for many years to come with regard to content ownership, and broadening of the value distribution wherever possible.

🌚 Browsing with dark mode makes you a better developer by a factor of exactly 40.

It's a scientific fact.
