This is a fantastic walk through; it reminds me of a quote I once heard in digital libraries and archives: "We're in the business of moving data slowly."
You're outlining (and detailing) a "slow approach" that demonstrates how to "refactor" data.
"refactor data" is the perfect expression. And much harder than refactoring code, but so rewarding when done right!
