I have long lurked the DEV halls, taking in all the knowledge, advice, and general loveliness the community produces in droves. I’d been too unsure to post myself but after seeing how welcoming and constructive you all are I figured I should try to be fearless. So in the following short little post, I want to share a win that wouldn’t have happened without this community!
In my free time, I love to make things look pretty. I first got introduced to CSS Art by Ali Spittel’s wonderful talk. From then on I was interested and (slowly) improved my skills. Last week, I was able to share my side interest with others! I held my first workshop for the STEAM (STEM + Arts) club on my university campus of which I am the VP Finance. Code + Art, as the event was named, seemed like the perfect mix for our mandate. I created a fairly simplistic animation of the Big Dipper and walked into a room of about 20 never-touched-code-before people to teach it.
I live coded the design, explained the basics of HTML, CSS, the DOM, and JS, and helped individual attendees when they stumbled. In just over an hour everyone walked out with a piece of art they could call their own. I walked out on a high. I didn’t realize just how great a feeling it is to share something you love✨
