Because the knowledge is relevant and critical. It's OK not to have learned these things. It's not OK to refuse to learn things vital to the job. Without core knowledge of the software environment, how the data is delivered and rendered from server to client, an internet software developer is unequipped to make good design decisions -- blindly unaware of what problems are being introduced or why.
