You might be interested in the Micro Editor. As the name suggests, it provides more functionalities than nano while maintaining its simplicity.
Update: I think I should tell you that I eventually did switch to Micro, last night, after someone else reminded me :) I worked out most of my issues already.
I heard of Micro a while back. I tried it out briefly. I was annoyed by its default bracket insertion and primitive syntax highlighting. I still plan to look into it more eventually, but I put it off.
