How to scrape twitter data with Headless Chrome and Puppeteer

Use case

Given a news tweet URL, I want to collect the following data points on every reply, reply of reply, reply of reply of reply, etc.

base_url
parent_url
comment_url
username
body
sentiment
likes_count
retweets_count
replies_count
published_datetime

Analysis

Tweets have the ability to appear as a reply to many (often 5+) parents, when they are only direct descendants of one parent. Twitter will display previews of conversations by randomly listing second or third-level descendants, but not without the prior context of a direct descendant. By using a depth-first traversal from the base tweet, we are able to scrape the graph as a tree by discarding relationships with a distance greater than 1 level.

Recursion

The base case is if the tweet has no replies (if the array returned from getSubTweetsUrls(page) is []). The base case will determine whether you add or subtract a layer of recursion. There are certain parameters you want to pass along in the method signature no matter how deep the recursion goes, such as base_url, parent_url, comment_url, and the Puppeteer browser object (page).

Extracting data

Besides the fields base_url, parent_url, and comment_url which are used by the recursive function to navigate the comments hierarchy, the rest of the data points must be extracted from the DOM. Puppeteer’s $$eval function gives access to the page’s DOM, where you can make clever use of selector queries to find relevant data. There are many different ways you can extract data from a DOM, ranging from mapping relationships between elements to doing a regex find on the HTML string.

Implementation

Run the script below to see it intelligently traverse the comments hierarchy on the given news tweet while printing the desired data points in sequence. Note that the base tweet supplied to start the process will not be queried for data or posted.
