I also don't understand users who do nothing but answer.

What don't you understand about them? I'm one of those people, although I haven't been as active for several years. My reasons are:

• If I have a question I can almost always find an existing one, already answered.
• I freelanced and thought SO would be a good way to show future clients I have a history of expertise.
• Kind of felt like a way to give back.
