My Ultralearning Journey in the Stock Market 💰✨

Week 1: The Beginning of a Lifelong Adventure 🚀

Hello everyone! I’m Prem Kumar V, and I’ve decided to embark on an exciting journey—learning the stock market from scratch. 📈 This isn't just a casual learning attempt; I’m taking it as an ultralearning project, inspired by Scott H. Young’s book.

For those unfamiliar, ultralearning is a self-directed, intense, and strategic learning approach. That means I’ll push myself to deeply understand the stock market, experiment, and iterate at an accelerated pace. Every Sunday, I’ll document my weekly progress here. If you’re a beginner like me, let’s learn together! And if you’re an expert, I welcome your feedback and corrections. 🤝

What I Learned in My First Week (Feb 2nd - Feb 8th, 2025) 📚

1️⃣ Stock Market Timings Matter ⏰

I always assumed that stocks were bought and sold 24/7—like scrolling through an e-commerce site. However, I quickly realized that the stock market follows strict trading hours. In India, it operates from 9:15 AM to 3:30 PM on weekdays. 🕙 Weekends? The market takes a break. 🏖️

2️⃣ Not All Markets Are the Same 🌏

Each country has its stock exchange. The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and Nasdaq run in the U.S., while India has the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE). The rules, regulations, and timings vary between them.

3️⃣ Pre-Market and Post-Market Trading 📉

There’s more to trading than just the regular hours! 🤔 There are pre-market and post-market sessions, where investors can prepare for the current and next day’s trading.

4️⃣ Investing vs. Trading 💵

I had heard these terms before but never understood the difference.

  • Investing is a long-term approach (months or years).
  • Trading is short-term and can even be as quick as seconds!
  • Day trading means buying and selling within a single day. 💡 That sounds risky, so beginners (like me) are advised to stay away from it.

5️⃣ The Crypto Market Never Sleeps 🚀

Unlike the stock market, cryptocurrencies trade 24/7. No weekends, no holidays—just non-stop action! 💪

6️⃣ Stocks vs. Shares: A Subtle Difference 🏢

People often say, “I own stocks” or “I own shares.” They seem interchangeable, but there’s a slight difference:

  • Saying “I own stocks” means you hold ownership in multiple companies.
  • Saying “I own 10 shares of Netflix” is more specific—you own a certain number of shares in a particular company.

7️⃣ Beginners Should Avoid Jumping Into Day Trading ⚡

I learned that new traders often make costly mistakes by jumping into fast-paced trading. Instead, it’s better to start with mid-cap and large-cap stocks that are less volatile.

8️⃣ Diversification: Don’t Put All Your Eggs in One Basket 🍳

I came across an interesting strategy called portfolio diversification. It means spreading investments across different assets to reduce risk.
For example:

  • If you have $1000, you could allocate:
    • $100 to stocks
    • $300 to crypto
    • $200 to bonds
    • And so on...

Even within stocks, you can diversify:

  • 10% in Apple
  • 10% in Meta
  • 10% in Tesla, etc. This helps manage risk and avoid losses from a single bad investment.

9️⃣ Risk & Money Management Are Everything 💸

One of my biggest takeaways: Understanding risk and managing money is even more important than picking stocks. Many traders lose money not because they chose bad stocks, but because they didn’t manage their money wisely. 🦾

My Learning Mindset 💪

Since this is my ultralearning journey, I want to apply these principles:
✅ Be aggressive in learning and experimenting

✅ Seek feedback from experts (that’s you!)

✅ Iterate fast—learn from mistakes and move forward

I might be wrong in some areas, so I invite your corrections, suggestions, and insights. You can drop a comment below or reach out to me via email. Let’s grow together! 🏆

See you next Sunday with my second-week (16 Feb 2025) progress! 🎡
