I took my first freelance gig recently. I accepted a much lower rate than I probably should have because I didn't have reputation yet on the site. It turned out to be way more work than I was getting paid for and I felt discouraged the entire time.

Getting the first gig on those sites is the hardest thing, so you could write some of the fee down to getting a good rating (and helping to secure further work at a proper rate)...but I completely understand where you’re coming from.
A friend once said to me, “charge enough that don’t resent the job after ten minutes.” I think there’s something in that, but it can be hard to get the balance right.
