Books should be references, not guide. I love the Bible version or the Syntax Reference of whatever language I'm learning (my technique is described here) But first I start with an interesting problem or idea I have and try to solve it. Then whenever I'm stuck, I skip to the part of the book that contains an explanation.
I don't watch video-based tutorials for this reason, (they are too slow and I'm not involved enough).
