Product Hunt is a great place to launch.
I launched twice last year and, more recently, contributed to launching dev-first, open-source products. Product Hunt helps raise awareness and enables early traction (reached 1,000 GH stars, hit 2.5K UV).
IMHO the question isn't if you should launch there, it's how, and you were spot on:
