Howdy DEV fam! ππ» What's good?
Today's discussion topic is really simple: What kind of music (in terms of music genre), do you listen to while coding? Or do you prefer no music at all? π€

I'll go first! ππ»ββοΈ I don't mind music while coding, but I prefer music with no/minimal lyrics. Lofi works well for me, but I also enjoy a Trap mix or maybe even an EDM mix. π
Yeah if there are lyrics it's going to seriously distract me. I'm unable to think about logic / code while English words are being spoken / sung. Easier when it's a language I don't understand but even then it's hard.
I always think the lyrics are deeper and more profound when you don't understand them. Lol!
facts
Most of the time I listen to freeCodeCamp Radio. Another one playlist on Spotify Lo-Fi Beats.
You are like Richard From Silicon Valley! HEHEHHE! :p
For me it's mostly the spotify playlist "to do list"
open.spotify.com/playlist/37i9dQZF...
If it's not that focus heavy I'll listen to some country most of the time
open.spotify.com/playlist/37i9dQZF...
P.S.: Where have you been early birdie? We missed you around here π’
Holiday for the kids β and yesterday was kingsday in the Netherlands πππ§‘
Figured (we "celebrate" it here too π€)! Hope you enjoyed the day! π And welcome back!
Love to let everything dev related go from time to time, but not too long π
DEVinitely healthy to do so! ππ»
Awesome! Country music huh? π€
Thanks for sharing @jmdejager ! π
I guess first time we get to tell about the posts she accidentally forgot lol.
My dear friend I present you with,
The Best programming music collection.
Thank me later : )
@coffeestasia Hope you won't mind.
I took notice of it, I was just wondering what the folks around here prefer. Hence this discussion π
Glad to hear that.
Idk the general opinion but I think listing to music while working makes it feel like a montage of sort, not a fan of that.
Generally I work for some time then either I listen to Eminem or watch some web series (mostly Fresh Prince on a loop) π
Pretty weird I know . Lol
Hope I'm not the only one doing that...
That's alright too! Not everyone likes listening to music while coding.
Thanks for sharing you thoughts π
Appreciate that.
Of course not! Thank you for sharing ππ
Most of the time I listen to freeCodeCamp Radio.
I also have some favourite playlists on Spotify:
Oh, I wasn't aware of fCCRadio π€ thanks for sharing! π
Link to it:

Well I might be one of the odd ones, but I listen most of the times to either reggaeton, bachata or r&b. I find that they have a vivid rhythm that helps with the way I think. I've tried lo-fi, slowed-reverb and instrumental, but for coding they don't feel rightπ . I listen to those when doing creative stuff that require less brain power.
Lo-fi happens to make me sleepy most of the time! π I understand π― why you need something upbeat when coding!
Thanks for sharing your thoughts @theowlsden ! ππ»ββοΈ
Oh my! I also listen a lot of reggaeton, salsa and bachata. While coding it gives good vibe and I am not "stiff" :D
Exactly! xD
I rarely listen to music while coding lol
Any reason why? π€
Well, first of all. I don't have good taste of music.
Secondly, whenever I code I mostly forget to listen to some music.
LOL, why would that matter? π€
It happens to the best of us! Sometimes I "forget" too, then I think: "Hmm, ain't it quite around here..." and I put some music on π
Ah, that's what you meant...
Btw, if you want to ask what's my favourite music is, it's "Under No Flag" from Battlefield V
Well, I just listen to hard bass π
What's with everyone asking about music for devs lately... π€
I honestly listen to a lot of different genres and would pick basically anything. I even have the tendency to loop one song for a whole day. My comment in another music-related post mentioned jazz, ambient, breakcore, and math rock, but I can name a ton more genres haha. I'm also not picky with lyrics or no lyrics if I'm already familiar with the songs.
I also don't really listen to playlists that often, I'm more of an album person. Can't say I've recently picked up an album either though. :p I've mostly been either looping 1 song or listening to my own playlists to see if they flow well before publishing them in public. Said playlists are short and narrative so not really worth sharing here, I believe.
If I had to pick 1 album to share here, I'd go for this: open.spotify.com/album/7ALFR4o9ZXf...
That was a lot of talking... π³ππ
My bad if this one's repetitive or redundant. It was a thought I had since last week but I'm only posting about it now. I'm late to the party, I know π€·π»ββοΈ
Despite that, thanks for sharing your thoughts! π Seems like you are quite flexible when it comes to music!
Nah, I'd gladly talk about music over and over again. :p It's a pretty common topic, just surprising that several people have talked about it recently on here. I was just wondering if something was happening that I wasn't aware of.
But yeah, I like broadening my horizons when it comes to genres! I also keep a list of albums I've listened to, but then again, I kinda have a list of everything. Now I must kindly leave because I write another wall of text about music--
Our minds are synchronizing! π
I can't listen to music while coding, it distracts me too much - I start following the different instruments and harmonics instead of focusing on my coding. Nothing I can do about it, it's this weird brain I got... :)
I can definitely relate to some degree! π
I listen to a wide variety, though mostly metal and electronic. Lyrics distract me when I'm working through complicated logic or when I'm writing text (documentation, emails).
My go-to streaming sites are radiou.com/battery/, somafm
com, di.fm, and music.youtube.com.
Well sort of on a schedule.
Early morning start with some Good source news - BBC, NPR
Later after the news some Sports, market and extra podcasts
after lunch Music like Reggaton, K pop or R&B - something that pumps up my blood for the rest of the day :)
LOL, news is definitely not on my radar. Makes me very depressed! π
Oh, for sure! π
Formidable list! ππ» Lo-fi makes me sleepy sometimes π but I still enjoy it despite that!
I like songs with minimal lyrics with some peaks where the song becomes loud all of a sudden. I suggest Trampoline, or if you want something heavier Rolling in the deep.
When I'm really focused, I don't really mind which songs because I don't hear the songs too well, maybe just the melodies or stuff.
It really depends, on focus-heavy work I like things that do not have any lyrics. I usually put on some classical or deep-house. Otherwise, it depends on my mood and can range from hip-hop/rock/pop/etc. My favorite album while spring is beginning is Van Morrison - Down the road. But that is just a guilty pleasure.
Oh, it's the same for me! π Heavy lyrics makes me sing a long, and well, not get the job done!
Thanks for joining in @smeetsmeister ! π
I really like calm classical pieces for coding. For example modern ones by Avo PΓ€rt, Max Richter and Einaudi or even Beethoven and Chopin.
Lofi Hiphop or Jazz are always fine and, don't laugh too much - the Minecraft Soundtrack ;)
Post rock and ambient
If you havenβt listened to the Depature Songs album by Hammock already, you should definitely check it out. chefβs kiss Perfection.
Of course i did.. It is amazing
Thank you for sharing! ππ»
It depends on what I'm doing specifically, if I need to really focus it's either lofi hip hop or no music at all, but the rest of the time I listen to my discover weekly playlist on spotify or punk rock
Well said! For me it tends to depend on the task at hand. Thanks for sharing your thoughts! π
Here's a longish playlist I created. It's called "Music to Code With".
It includes music without lyrics, and minimal vocals. It'll keep the mood going for a long coding session!
music.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL...
Jeremy Soule Skyrim remixes on youtube
Iβm currently using a 10 hour loop of Secunda by him!
Nice to ask.
Im recently listening to smooth jazz from paul desmond, jim hail, gerry mulligant. sometimes i prefer listening to ambient-like or general j-pop song depends on my mood and situation (ΰΈ >Ο<*ΰΈ )
Sounds soothing! π Thanks for sharing!
Usually electronic music, once in a while classical.
Most of the time I listen to di.fm and have been listening to it for I think over 15 years!
My favorite channels there are:
Chillout
Atmospheric Breaks
Melodic Progressive
Synthwave
Vocal Trance
I listen to everything, and nothing in particular π₯΄π.
Recommendations:
Shingo Nakamura's remix of Blugazer's Ethereal Concepts (here's a mix youtu.be/WYp9Eo9T3BA). If you're into any kind of mixes, I highly recommend anything Shingo Nakamura does, or Ben BΓΆhmer (link: youtu.be/_jWp5RpEjt0)
I like contemporary classical music. So, try JΓ³hann JΓ³hannssons, "Flight From the City" (link: youtu.be/aXlx-YnvgKU)
I recently discovered Bo Hanssonβs Music Inspired by Lord of the Rings - I love how trippy and brain-stimulating it is!
Oh wow! π± Got a link you can share?
Sure, there you go!

Sweet! ππ»
I have been listening to electronica for coding for a long time. I can really recommend some of the streams from Soma fm like "Deep Space One", "Drone Zone" or "Space Station Soma". At some point I came across musicforprogramming.net/ which btw the way has an awesome UI. It is available in many places and it is even available as a podcast, I even got it listed on here on dev. I am maintain my own Spotify playlist "/Music/Hacking" for those of you which prefer electronica for focus and zone work
I have a playlist of music that gets me through the day, a variety of toe-tapping tunes for background noise.
It's a work in progress, it's fun to dump different music in there.
open.spotify.com/playlist/0JJxIye6...
I don't need any additional music - my code is musicπ
When I'm in the mood for pop music I code in javascript. For metal/industrial i code in C.
I mostly listen to Lo-Fi. Recently I found star wars lofi and it is just awesome π΅.
also there is a surprise from Spotify. I didnβt know until recently but when you play Star wars music in Spotify the progress bar would turn into lightsaber. It is soo cool π
Mynoise.net for any type of environmental or "zen" type sound (singing bowls, Japanese garden, etc). If I need to up my tempo, hard driving bass helps. And a trick to get your brain to minimize outside distractions (and even thoughts): make a short playlist of songs you know really well. Put on repeat. By the second repeat, you will quit singing along and start to block out the words. And some of your own distracting thoughts. :) Also works well with songs in a language you don't know.
I listen to Rock/MetalCore while doing the coding, sometime lofi
I am REALLY BAD at multitasking, so if I listen to real music (i.e. songs with lyrics, strong melodical composition) I'll get too distracted. Lofi is safe but... kind of boring for me.
I preferably listen to indie/orchestral/jazz/opera/Lo-fi music when Iβm doing something that I kinda have to pay attention too and if itβs a no brainer task I listen to hip-hop .
A question too : How do you create the numbered list which goes to different posts ?
Lo-Fi helps me to concentrate surprisingly when writing code and also 90s hip-hop too.
I listen usually a mix between EDM, Power Dubstep and Power Metal xD. You should try Powerwolf and Sirenz.
Sounds lit π₯π Thanks for dropping by! Will be sure to check these out! ππ»
Thanks β€οΈβ€οΈβ€οΈ
I definitely appreciate a good mix while I code, something on Soundcloud like this: soundcloud.com/wavy-culture/groovymix

Electronic Music in general:
Any channel on DI.fm di.fm/
Critical Role's Mighty Vibes Vol.2 youtu.be/gsu8S9Pvbio
Instrumental upbeats like the awesome mixes of Jim TV Channel : youtube.com/channel/UCT5RMcRGa32Th...
And sometimes when the vibe is different I love the Instrumental Hip Hop Mixes, the rafi:ki channel is a gem: youtube.com/user/Rafi111sf
Video Games soundtracks are amazing too, highly recommend any of the Assassin's Creed
Typically any of the LoFi chill mixes on Youtube. Like this one,
I listen to Lo-fi, gets me into Flow state.
