Microsoft is such a large organization (~150k employees + contractors during its peak time). Each team is run independently, so some of these things are team-specific.
Bing hosted HackDays on a Thursday/Friday once a year (if I recall correctly). I've heard that after Satya took over, MSFT hosts a one-week hackathon once a year (which is a very new thing for MSFT).
Microsoft is a global company. Bing was a globally distributed organization. I worked with people in Brazil, Canada, India, UK, and Norway quite frequently.
