All the traffic is being encrypted below the application layer, from the first byte of the header to the last byte of the body. Not only POST, but all the request methods (including GET) are protected when using HTTPS.

Thanks for pointing that out Thomas. I should have been clearer with what I meant. If sending something like form data by a GET request it would need to be sent as URL parameters and consequently be insecure compared to sending the data in the body of a POST request over HTTPS.
