My experience with an old mbpro 2011 (maxed out) and ubuntu 19.10 has been like when I tried my first hackintosh, almost everything works, but it's not the real thing.
Get a thinkpad, you can't go wrong with it, as good as an apple for hardware and performance (presently on a t480s ubuntu 20.04)
