The error mostly occurs on Dell systems, but it can appear on other system brands as well. If a software modifies the default security provider in Windows XP, then it may result in this error. Sometimes, change in a system drive letter can also be a reason for this issue. In this tutorial, we will help you to Fix Windows Error Code 80070002 by providing some simple solutions.

Fix #1 – Reset the Default Security Provider:

To fix this error, you have to edit your PC’s registry. It is important that you should take a backup of your registry before starting the steps to fix this issue.

  • Remove the registry keys that are connected with the security provider in order to reset the default security provider.
  • You have to close any opened applications and shut down your PC completely.
  • After that, you have to boot up your system.
  • Once the system starts to boot, you have to press the F8 key to open in safe mode.
  • Now, you have to open the Run command by using this shortcut Windows key + R.
  • Type ‘ regedit.exe ‘ and click the *OK * button.

HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Cryptography\Providers

  • Right-click on the ‘Providers’ file and delete it.
  • Now, you have to repeat the same procedure again for the following path.

HKEY_USERS\S-1-5 20\Software\Microsoft\Cryptography\Providers

  • Next, you have to close the Registry Editor and restart your system in normal mode.

Fix #2 – Change the Drive Letter of the System:

You have to be cautious while altering the drive letter on your system. If you are not comfortable, you can get professional assistance.

  • You have to open the Run box with the use of this keyboard shortcut Windows key + R.
  • Then, you have to type ‘ regedit.exe ‘ and click the *OK * button.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM

  • Now, you have to select and right-click on the Mounted Devices folder and choose Permissions to make sure that Administrators have full control.
  • You have to close the Registry Editor and then repeat the above steps to check whether the drive letter changed or not.
