Major Functional Testing Techniques

In this era, faster delivery of applications is one of the major needs. And, along with this factor, there is even a crucial need for having quality products that function as per the expectations of the clients.

This way of delivering applications that are assured with quality, performance, and reliability effectively helps in enhancing the app engagement with customers. Thus, to make this achieved, teams have to perform functional testing along with their various functional testing techniques.

Testing and Quality Assurance (QA) are two major aspects of the software testing lifecycle (SDLC). In order to ensure these are achieved in the application, several types of testing are performed.

Functional testing is one of the software testing type, in which the developed system is tested to validate if it is meeting the requirements and functionalities are satisfied.

Functional testing is also known as black-box testing. In this testing approach, the source code of the application is not tested. Each functionality of the system is tested by providing appropriate input and comparing the obtained output with the expected output.

Functional testing has huge importance in validating the quality and effectiveness of the application before its production. Thus, it is crucial for the QA teams to understand what functional testing is and what are the various techniques helping to improve the app's effectiveness.
What is Functional Testing?

Functional testing is one of the software testing types that is performed by Software testers. It is defined as the software testing type that helps in validating each functionality of the software is operating as per the requirement or the specification provided by the client. In this method, the source code of the application is not concerned, thus, it is even known as a kind of black-box testing.

Functional testing can be performed either way, i.e. with manual testing and automation testing. Generally, the areas or the functionalities that are validated with functional testing include security, APIs, user interface or UI, database, Client and Server systems, the functionality of the application, etc.

What are the various benefits with Functional Testing?

Functional testing helps QA testers in many ways, such as:

Helps in delivering the exact application as specified by the client or the stakeholder
Helps in eliminating the bugs or defects in the application before app delivery
Ensures the app being developed is as per the requirements and specifications’
Helps in increasing the app effectiveness
Helps in delivering applications that make user-satisfied
Assures in delivering a quality-assured and reliable application for end-users

What are the different Functional Testing techniques?

Functional testing is categorized in different ways, and each of the testing technique is having a crucial role in delivering quality applications.

Here listing the most important functional testing types:

Equivalence tests: In this functional testing technique, the test data is broken into different partitions. As the name states, every data in each of the partitions has to respond in an equivalent manner. In this method, there is one rule followed, i.e. if any of the conditions fails to match any of the partitions, then testing of the other partitions is stopped.

Decision-based Tests: With this decision-based technique, the QA teams can validate the possible number of outcomes that can be derived when a particular condition meets the requirement.

Boundary Value Tests: With this boundary value testing technique, QA teams can validate how the system behaves when boundary limits are introduced. And, if the implemented boundary values are greater than the input values, then the testing practice is considered as negative testing.

End-user based Tests: With this end-user based testing technique, the QA teams can check if all the components in the application are working properly when they are combined.

Ad-hoc Testing: It is the functional testing technique that is performed to identify the bugs when they are not identified with any of the above-mentioned techniques.

Functional testing is one of the very important and crucial testing practices in software testing. With this method, enterprises can ensure that every functional requirement that enhances the app performance is met before it is released for end-users. The above-mentioned information helps in detailing what functional testing is, and what are the various testing techniques to perform functional testing. Leverage functional testing services from next-gen QA testing services provider to ensure all functionalities of the app are working properly.
