dev.to bots?

yujiri8 profile image Ryan Westlund ・1 min read

I recently picked up about 30 new followers out of nowhere. At first I was super excited thinking "Whoa, I can't believe how fast I've picked up an audience!" But my posts still only get a few reactions on average, so I checked out a couple of the followers and almost all of them have no posts or commments and nothing filled out on their profile. Most of them are new, but multiple days old, and at least one is from over a month ago... nothing ever written but just recently followed me.

So I got to wondering, are some of these bots? I remember back when I watched Smarter Every Day seeing a couple of videos from him (and other Youtubers) talking about Facebook having a bot infestation. Does dev.to have a situation like that?

Hmmm...of course I don't know, but I was just followed by someone that has posted to a couple of different posts with what seems like the same message. They seem very bot like to me. I actually ran across this post because I was trying to find a place to either report a potential bot or find out about bot activity on dev.to.

Dev presents new users with some recommendations of folks to follow when they sign up. You can read more about how that works in this post:

There's also the 90-9-1 rule where 90% will lurk and read without much else, 10% will react to a post and 1% will comment

Okay, thanks for you answer :)

Nah, usually it's new sign-ups. Be users are presented with a few potential people to follow and one of the factors for appearing (I think) is recent activity.
