Discussion on: What is Docker? Why is it important and necessary for developers? Part I

"By doing so, thanks to the container, the developer can rest assured that the application will run on any other Linux machine regardless of any customized settings that machine might have that could differ from the machine used for writing and testing the code."

I just use a Vagrantbox for that... Which contains the exact same system as our testing and production systems, provisioned with the exact same Ansible playbook. One "vagrant up", and I have the entire system, including PostgreSQL, OpenJDK, etc, ready to go. Why should I abstract that away even more and run yet-another-tool on the servers? If the servers differ in their config between each other, your devops failed.

And for client software where I don't know what configuration the user is running... I just create an AppImage. Which is way less wasteful than a Docker image and can be downloaded and run without depending on Docker or whatever tooling.
