Understanding Binary Numbers: The Language of Computers

In the binary system, each position represents a power of 2, similar to how each position in a decimal number represents a power of 10.

Computers Speak Binary
Computers operate using electrical signals, which can easily be represented as two states: on (1) and off (0). This binary representation is efficient for computers because it aligns with their hardware capabilities.

Binary numbers form the foundation for all data representation in computers, including:

Numbers: Integer and floating-point representations.
Characters: Using encoding schemes like ASCII, where each character corresponds to a unique binary number.

To convert a decimal number to binary, use the following method:

Divide the decimal number by 2.
Record the remainder (it will be either 0 or 1).
Continue dividing the quotient by 2 until the quotient is 0.
The binary representation is the remainders read in reverse order.
