Summiting Mount Kenya

A Rock Climber's Epic Odyssey

Hey there, fellow adventurers,
Prepare to be whisked away on a tale of grit, determination, and breathtaking vistas as I recount my recent escapade conquering the formidable heights of Mount Kenya. Strap in, because this journey is one you won't soon forget.
Day 1: The Journey Begins
Our expedition kicked off from the Naro Moru River Lodge amidst a buzz of excitement and anticipation. With gear meticulously sorted and spirits soaring high, we embarked on a 10 AM departure, weaving through the scenic landscapes of Meru Town, a lush haven of coffee cultivation, before our arrival at Chogoria. The air crackled with anticipation as we ascended through the forest gate, marking the commencement of our odyssey. A 200 km journey lay behind us, but the real adventure lay ahead.

Day 2: Into the Wild
With the first light of dawn, we set forth on the trail, the forest canopy whispering secrets as we made our ascent to Bairuni clearing at 2,370m. The rhythm of our footsteps echoed the beating of our hearts, each stride bringing us closer to the heart of the mountain. Four hours of trekking led us to our campsite, where the tranquility of the wilderness enveloped us in its embrace.
Day 3: Scaling New Heights
The path unfurled before us like a ribbon of possibilities as we pressed onward, ascending to the gate cliffs through Uramandi hut. The air grew thinner, the terrain more challenging, but with each step, we drew closer to the summit. As dusk descended upon the rugged landscape, we found respite near Mt. Kenya Forest Lodge, our spirits undimmed by the trials that lay ahead.

Day 4: A Test of Endurance
Steeling ourselves for the journey ahead, we embarked on a trek through Mugi hills, navigating steep inclines and rocky terrain to reach the ethereal beauty of Lake Ellis at 3,460m. The sheer majesty of our surroundings left us breathless, a testament to the raw power and beauty of the natural world. As night fell, we gathered around the campfire, our laughter mingling with the crackle of flames against the starlit sky.

Day 5: A Symphony of Sights and Sounds
With the dawn's first light, we set out once more, traversing the enchanting Hinde Valley en route to the Hall Tarns/Mintos Hut at 4,300m. The landscape unfolded before us like a masterpiece, each turn revealing a new tableau of rugged peaks and verdant valleys. As we made camp for the night, the mountain whispered its secrets, a symphony of sights and sounds that stirred the soul.
Day 6: Reaching for the Sky
The pinnacle of our journey awaited as we embarked on the ascent of Pt. Lenana at 4,985m, charting a course via Simba Col, Lake Harris, and Kobe Peak. With each step, we drew closer to the heavens, our spirits buoyed by the knowledge that the summit lay within reach. As we reached Mackinders Camp and settled into our Teleki Lodge at 4,150m, a sense of awe washed over us, a testament to the indomitable spirit of human endeavor.

Day 7: Homeward Bound
With the summit behind us and the memories of our journey etched into our hearts, we began the descent via the Naro Moru route, navigating the treacherous terrain with a mix of exhilaration and trepidation. As we reached Met. Station and bid farewell to the mountain that had become our home, we carried with us the knowledge that we had tested our limits and emerged victorious.

So there you have it, my friends. A tale of adventure, endurance, and the unyielding spirit of the human soul. Until next time, may your journeys be as epic as the mountains you climb.
Warm regards,
[javier hernandez]
