Introduction to GDSC and Its Mission
Google Developer Student Clubs are university based community groups for students interested in Google developer technologies. Students from all undergraduate or graduate programs with an interest in growing as a developer are welcome. By joining a GDSC, students grow their knowledge in a peer-to-peer learning environment and build solutions for local businesses and their community.
Google Developer Student Clubs (GDSC) aim to empower students to bridge the gap between theory and practice by providing hands-on experiences and fostering a community of learners. Our mission at the Mbeya University of Science and Technology (MUST) is to inspire and educate students in various tech domains, equipping them with the skills to solve real-world problems and contribute positively to society.
Formation and Inception
The GDSC chapter at Mbeya University of Science and Technology was founded in 2023, marking a significant milestone in our institution’s journey towards promoting technological innovation and collaboration. Led by Sitta Ngwesa, the club began as a small group of tech enthusiasts and quickly grew into a vibrant community committed to learning and development.
Growth and Development
Over the year, our chapter grew from a handful of members to a thriving community of over 215 members. We organized numerous events, workshops, and projects that catered to the diverse interests and needs of our members, fostering a culture of learning, innovation, and community engagement.

1. Info Session
Our introductory Info Session held on September 15, 2023, served as a welcoming event for new and existing members. We discussed the goals and benefits of being part of GDSC, outlined the year’s planned activities, and introduced our leadership team. This session was crucial for setting the tone for the academic year and encouraging students to actively participate in upcoming events.
2. Hacktoberfest 2023 in Mbeya
In collaboration with DigitalOcean, we hosted Hacktoberfest 2023 in Mbeya on October 28, 2023. This event was part of a global initiative encouraging contributions to open-source projects. Participants learned about open-source development and made their first contributions to various projects, which not only enhanced their coding skills but also fostered a spirit of community and collaboration within the open-source ecosystem.
3. Exploring the Future of Technology
Held on March 16, 2024, Exploring the Future of Technology focused on the latest trends and advancements in technology, including artificial intelligence, blockchain, and quantum computing. Guest speakers from leading tech firms provided insights into how these technologies are shaping the future, and students engaged in discussions about their implications and opportunities.
4. Build with AI
On April 26, 2024, we conducted the "Build with AI" workshop, which offered participants hands-on experience with Google’s latest AI tools like Gemini, Vertex AI, and Duet AI. This event aimed to equip students with practical skills in AI/ML and fostered an environment where ideas and projects could be shared and developed collaboratively.
5. AI/ML Bootcamp: Advanced AI/ML Concepts and Applications
From May 3-4, 2024, we hosted an intensive bootcamp on advanced AI and machine learning concepts. Participants were introduced to complex topics such as deep learning, neural networks, and natural language processing. The bootcamp included practical sessions where students built their own AI models using tools like TensorFlow, providing a deep dive into the technical aspects of AI/ML development.

As the GDSC Lead, I had the privilege of working with an incredible team of core members who were dedicated to the success of our club.
