Starting Web App in 2023 Research Results

We are finally excited to share the results of our second study on how engineers start web applications in 2023!

Last year, we conducted a groundbreaking study on how web apps were started in 2022, which received much attention and numerous citations. This year, we’re excited to have continued that research to capture the latest trends and dynamics in the web app development industry. Our goal was to understand how web apps will be launched in 2023, regardless of the job title of those launching web app projects.

For this year’s study, we conducted a survey to gain valuable insights into the current trends and dynamics of web app development. A total of 303 respondents from 33 countries participated in the survey, which revealed some remarkable results.

Key findings highlighted:

  • Low-code/no-code (LCNC) tools remain popular among entry-level engineers, as does a combination of LCNC and more traditional approaches.
  • React, Node.js, and PostgreSQL are the most in-demand technologies of the year, with starter kits and boilerplates being the most commonly used for development.
  • AWS is the preferred cloud hosting platform for most web applications, and developers prefer to manage databases manually.
  • WordPress and Wix are the most popular no-code/low-code solutions.
  • Learning code is mainly done through online resources, especially online videos.
  • More than half of respondents said they will use AI tools for web application development.
  • Experienced engineers are more likely to pay for third-party code, such as templates, starter kits, and other SaaS tools.
