Music Monday — What are you listening to? (Music Videos Edition)

cover image source: Giphy

Continuing our visual voyage through music, I wanna turn our attention to music videos. Music videos came to vogue in the MTV era and really transformed the way we consume music. In some ways, it pulled the attention away from the music itself and put it more on the surrounding visuals. Some folks used the new medium to further accent and even elevate their art, telling stories that capture the essence of the song. Others kept the videos simple — just a band on a stage playing their instruments — using it as an opportunity to show off their skills and highlight the musicians. And still others took it as a chance to show off their amazing dancing, good looks, or wild styles! In any case, music videos caught on big time and haven't really waned since... like album art, the music video was birthed because of the particular technology at the time and then became a staple of the industry. Today, MTV seems to care less and less about music videos... luckily, there are places like YouTube where you can dig up music videos on demand. Because these places are easy enough to post to and build an audience, you even get some artists who prioritize creating music videos and posting them online... this occasionally leads to some super creative content that likely wouldn't have made it through a major label and marketing team. Anywho, I realize I could probably wax on and on about music videos, but I'll wrap it up so we can get to sharing. As always, feel free to step outside the guidelines and share whatever music interests ya. BTW, if you're gonna share something that is NSFW, please be polite and leave some sort of warning. Thanks y'all!

Oh absolutely, Schalk! Great mention.

They make some of the smoothest, most interesting prog out there today.

I like how this video is just them on a white background playing the crap out of their instruments. The virtuosic playing is on full display here! 🔥

You said it! This is the one that introduced me to these virtuosos.

Oh yeah, this is the one I recognize best! I love how it starts with this classical vibe before just going off in a more almost kinda hip hop direction.

Great music video too... they do a good job of visualizing and emphasizing certain parts of the music.

Also, and this has nothing to do with their music, but Tim Henson just looks like a cool, real life anime character to me, haha!

Speaking of modern prog, I really like this band called Battles. Def different than Polyphia, but still interesting.

They've been through different phases, but here they are as a trio doing a badass instrumental... it's also a totally kick-butt music video:

But also, since you offered up a video that was kinda more stripped-down, here's a version of the same song but not as produced and played in a room where you can see everybody doing their thing!

I simply love the cheesiness of anything '70s and '80s, so when I saw this montage it became an instant hit

(this also reminded me that someday I need to organize my "music videos" backup folder on my home server...)

Wooaaaaa! Dude, that Spiderman track + music video is hilariously dope.

I really, I mean really, like this song. It's def a bit cheesy, but jeez, they are on fire. 🔥Those drums with the vibraphone (I think that's what it is at least) + the horns... this song has so many instruments and it's always freaking moving! Plus you got those classy vocals balancing it out... it's kinda hilarious how much care went into this track. It's Spiderman, haha!

And now I'm on Old Gods of Asgard! Haha, this is straight up silly, but a lotta fun! I got a friend who is totally an Alan Wake stan and he's gonna dig this, haha.

I forgot to listen to this earlier in the week, but dammit, I love some NIN. This is a good one! I love how minimalist it is.

Oh heck yeah! This is a classic rockin' track — fun music video too. 🎸

Speaking of, I saw a good interview with Bon Jovi the other day here:

That's such a great talk and fact that Bon Jovi bought back his first guitar after 26 years is indeed a blessing. Where do the things you sell go? Sometimes, back to the seller- and in unimagined ways. 😸

Wow, I'm loving this! 🙌

It feels very of the mid-2000s indie rock to me and that's a damn good thing. There were a lotta good indie bands making awesome music at this time. I like the gravelly soulful vocals a lot... so nice!

I hadn't thought about this band in so long but they were on a music DVD I had in high school — Bonaroo 2004... I can't find the actual performance right now, but here's the song. It's still fire!

Gah, I'm gonna have to dig into more of their stuff now. I really dig this band, haha!
