Linux user here, and while at home I just use the laptop & trackpad, I have 2 external monitors (I think their 24" widescreens), a nice keyboard and cordless mouse at the office.

I tend to have the default line trimming at 80 regardless of editor, and group applications to the same screen regions based on what I'm using them for (automated by devilspie2).

At the office, communication (thunderbird, Skype, teams etc) go on the laptop monitor almost out of view to my right. That's also where notifications show to reduce distractions. Editor's (Eclipse, gedit, etc) mostly go full screen in the centre. Though my Eclipse workspace has console output & status updates on the laptop monitor, with extra panels on the left. Left monitor is pretty much exclusively browser & terminal.

When not in the office, devilspie2 notices I only have 1 monitor & moves everything to predefined sizes on the laptop screen. I then switch workspaces in Eclipse to one I've setup for single screen use.

When running a meeting on a large screen, again devilspie2 notices & configures me for meetings (new browser session on the mammoth meeting screen, terminal etc defaults to laptop screen but can be moved).

Point being, I disagree with your title. Having different workflows in different situations works - at least for me.
