Nothing failed all at once. That’s what made it hard to notice.
When I let AI define “good enough,” work moved faster. Outputs looked clean. Decisions felt reasonable. There were no obvious errors to correct. But over time, something structural broke—not in the results, but in the standards guiding them.
That’s what AI standards erosion looks like. Quiet. Gradual. Easy to rationalize.
“Good enough” became a moving target
At first, “good enough” meant acceptable under review. I still evaluated logic, assumptions, and implications. AI just helped me get there faster.
Over time, “good enough” shifted. If the output sounded coherent and aligned with expectations, I stopped asking whether it met my standards or merely passed inspection.
AI didn’t lower the bar intentionally. It normalized a version of adequacy that felt efficient, not rigorous.
Standards collapsed into fluency
AI is excellent at producing language that feels finished. Structure is tight. Tone is confident. Gaps are smoothed over.
That fluency became the proxy for quality. If something read well, I treated it as done. The distinction between “clearly written” and “clearly reasoned” blurred.
This is where AI standards quietly weaken. Fluency replaces criteria.
I stopped noticing what was missing
One of the first things to go was discomfort. Messy drafts. Unresolved questions. Partial conclusions. AI removed those signals automatically.
Without friction, I stopped noticing what hadn’t been explored:
- alternative approaches
- underlying assumptions
- second-order consequences
The work looked complete before the thinking was.
Review turned into alignment checking
My review process didn’t disappear—it narrowed. I checked whether the output aligned with my expectations, not whether it deserved them.
If the result fit the mental model I already had, it passed. If it didn’t, I revised wording instead of questioning direction.

Once AI-defined adequacy became the norm, it influenced what decisions I was willing to make. I committed faster. I accepted narrower reasoning. I stopped pushing outputs to their edge cases.
Nothing catastrophic happened. But decisions became harder to defend and easier to forget.
The work held up until it was challenged. Then the cracks showed.
The cost appeared downstream
The real cost of letting AI define “good enough” didn’t show up immediately. It appeared later—during follow-up questions, reviews, or moments that required explanation.
I could restate conclusions, but I struggled to reconstruct why they were justified. The standards had shifted from can this hold up to does this look fine.
That’s when I realized something important had broken.
Reclaiming standards requires friction
Fixing this wasn’t about distrusting AI. It was about reinstating standards that AI can’t enforce.
I had to:
- define what “good enough” meant before generating
- separate language quality from reasoning quality
- slow down decisions, not drafting
AI works best when standards are explicit and human-owned.
AI doesn’t know your standards unless you do
AI will always deliver something that looks acceptable. It has no inherent sense of sufficiency, rigor, or consequence. Those standards come from the person using it—or they don’t come at all.
What broke when I let AI define “good enough” wasn’t quality in the short term. It was my ability to notice when quality mattered more than speed.
