With as much experience and knowledge I have about browser extension development, you create them using JavaScript/TypeScript.
Although I am a fan of TypeScript and have been using it almost everywhere for past couple of months, I used JavaScript for this project as it was really small and I didn't want to overcomplicate it as this is my first time building a browser extension.
I might rewrite the extension in TypeScript in the future.
