What is a DC Motor?
A DC motor (Direct Current motor) is an electric machine that converts electrical energy into mechanical energy using direct current. It works on the principle that a current-carrying conductor placed in a magnetic field experiences a force — this is known as Lorentz force.
Main Parts of a DC Motor
Armature (Rotor)
The rotating part that holds the coil and rotates when current flows.
Stator
The stationary part of the motor that provides a magnetic field, usually using permanent magnets or field windings.
Commutator
A rotary switch that reverses current direction in the armature windings to keep the motor spinning in one direction.
Brushes
These are made of carbon or graphite and press against the commutator to transfer current to the armature.
Shaft
The rod connected to the rotor that transfers mechanical motion to the outside world.
Working Principle of a DC Motor
When current flows through the armature coil, it creates a magnetic field.
This field interacts with the magnetic field of the stator.
The interaction creates a force (Lorentz force), causing the armature to rotate.
The commutator switches the direction of current every half turn to keep the motor rotating in the same direction.
