AI Vs Web Developers: Will AI completely erase Web Development as we know it?

Over the years, Web Development has remained one of the most sought after fields in tech, with consistently high demand. It was recorded between 2019 -2020 that there was a 25% increase in web developers roles. Approximately 56,400 web developer openings were posted on Glassdoor in 2020, making it the most demanded IT specialization that year. This surge can largely be attributed to the COVID-19 lockdown period, which caused a great increase in internet usage. General internet usage reportedly rose by 70%, forcing 91.2% of businesses to increase their web development and design services. By the end of 2020 roughly 29% of firms invested in entirely new digital solutions.

However between 2020 and today, the tech space has evolved repidly...
On November 30, 2022, OpenAI released ChatGPT-3.5 model and it gained a million users within just 5 days of it release. This marked as a watershed moment for the AI industry, fundamentally shifting Artificial Intelligence from highly specialized enterprise applications to mainstream global adoption. Although Large Language Model (LLM) was first introduced in 2017, OpenAI’s GPT releases significantly advanced the technology. This progress led to the development of many custom GPT-based tools built on OpenAI’s models.

Between 2022 till now, there's been a lot of efforts to greatly increase AI reliability, accessibility, and adoption. As of now, AI models are being used in basically every tech sector including Web development.
In early 2023, 10Web became one of the first professional-grade platforms to integrate generative AI (LLMs) to automate WordPress site creation. By May 2023, they launched AI Website Builder 2.0, which specifically utilized generative AI to convert text prompts into full, hosted WordPress sites with AI-generated copy and images. Since then, many other AI-driven platforms focused on automated website creation have emerged.

Now to the big question:
What does this mean for Web Developers?..... Is AI gradually replacing Web Developers?.... Has AI completely erased the need for Web Developers? The list of questions are endless, but it all boils down to one central concern, How does the advent of AI's affected Web Developers. We'll explore that in my next blog post.

PS: No! This blog post wasn't written by AI. Why are you still reading, it wasn't. Well of course I made use of AI in my research with citations from web sources.🫠
