Capitalism as the Only Horizon: The Commodification of Life

This text analyzes contemporary capitalism through the lens of Branko Milanović's theory, pointing to the lack of systemic alternatives to the current economic order. A key issue is the commodification of life, the process by which leisure time and interpersonal relationships become commodities. The author describes the mechanisms of outsourcing domestic services and the emergence of a new elite—homoploutia. The article also examines the tensions between globalization and the welfare state, introducing concepts such as welfare nationalism and light citizenship. The overall text demonstrates how the logic of profit permeates the deepest social structures, replacing traditional community bonds with market functionality. This is an important contribution to the discussion about the future of society in an era of an economy of precariousness and ubiquitous meritocracy, which redefines the concept of human capital.
