Project Summary
The Seva Bharathi Hospitals and Diagnostic Centre is a 35-bed charitable multi-speciality healthcare centre which has an operation in the densely populated region (Sitarambagh / Mallepally) of Hyderabad, Telangana and is dedicated to delivering high-quality and compassionate medical services to every section of society. The hospital has gone beyond caring about patient health to taking care of the environment as true to its ethos that care is what you start when you enter the hospital.
The hospital contracted Hydromo to design, supply, and install at the hospital a 30 KLD Packaged Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) in order to meet high Pollution Control Board (PCB) standards and to facilitate sustainable water management. The project was able to cope with intricate problems of retrofitting an advanced wastewater treatment system into an urban hospital with already built severe space and location limitations.
Successful Installation of a 30 KLD Packaged Sewage Treatment Plant at Seva Bharathi Hospitals and Diagnostic Centre, Hyderabad
Background and Challenges
The Seva Bharathi Hospitals produce hospital grade wastes in the form of hospital waste. Being a fully functioning facility, any solution could not require significant civil changes or excavations underground on the hospital grounds.
**
Key challenges included:**
Space was limited on the actual site, so the STP had to be located at least 500 meters off the main building, which was the hospital.
The location of the installation was enclosed by residential colonies and business enterprises, and odor control was an absolute necessity. The local community may get upset by any foul smell emanating during the treatment process or treated water, which may result in a negative image of the hospital.
It was obligatory to adhere to the norms of the Central and State Pollution Control Board (CPCB/PCB) and to comply with such parameters as BOD less than 30 mg/L, COD less than 250 mg/L, TSS less than 100 mg/L, and the pH range of 6.590.
The system had to be able to manage the variable loads common in a hospital and allow the use of treated water to be reused in non-potable applications such as flushing, gardening and cooling to minimize freshwater usage.
It was necessary that minimal interference was done with the running operations of the hospital during installation.
STPs that were based on concrete were not considered because of the large civil work, excavation and time consuming project cycles they involve.
Hydromo’s Solution
Hydromo proposed and executed a compact 30 KLD Packaged (Containerized) STP based on advanced Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor (MBBR) or hybrid biological treatment technology. This modular, factory-assembled system offered the perfect fit for the site constraints.
The main benefits of the Packaged STP:
Any significant excavation or civil work was not needed within the hospital premises – the whole unit was placed at a distant outdoor site, which was 500 meters away.
100% enclosure and airtight design: The design has effective aeration, bio-filtration, and airtight construction that does not allow any unpleasant smell to escape. The surrounding residential and commercial buildings have not complained of odor since the commissioning. The water that has been treated and the plant itself are totally odorless and this allows the neighbourhood to coexist in harmony with the plant.
High treatment efficiency: The plant has been able to produce quality effluent that is consistently within and in most cases above all parameters of PCB compliance, thereby qualifying to be reused or discharged.
Efficient pipeline network: Hydromo designed and installed a special sewage collection and treated water return pipeline with 500 meters which used good pumping systems and proper hydraulic design with minimum operational interference.
Quick installation and maintenance: The packaged unit was installed and commissioned very quickly because it had been pre-tested in the factory. The automation of controls (PLC-based) allows stable 24/7 working with a small number of operators.
Sustainability focus: Treated water is re-used as gardening water, flushing water and other non-drinkable water and this has greatly minimized water usage in the hospital, which would be used in freshwater consumption.
Implementation Highlights
Although the project was a distant one and the degree of urbanization was high, it was undertaken in a smooth way with proper planning, quality materials and coordination. All the safety and hygiene measures were observed by the Hydromo team during the installation so that it would not affect the hospital activities.
Results and Impact
The 30 KLD Packaged STP of Seva Bharathi Hospitals has been successfully commissioned and is doing very well:
Complete Odour-Free Operation: The immediate residential and commercial neighbourhood is not affected, no smell or nuisance has been subjected to which is a highly significant achievement in terms of a highly sensitive urban setting.
Complete Regulatory Conformance: Treated effluent is always up to all CPCB/PCB standards.
Water Conservation: The use of water is reused to a significant level and it is included in the sustainability goals and cost savings of the hospital.
Operational Reliability: The system is efficient and needs minimal maintenance with a lean operational procedure, enabling the hospital personnel to concentrate on the primary healthcare provision.
Environmental Leadership: Seva Bharathi Hospitals has become a role model to other hospitals in Hyderabad and the rest of the world on how even with limited space, urban hospitals can deliver responsible management of wastewater.
The hospital management has been greatly satisfied with the solution citing the smooth integration and the good effect on the environment.
Conclusion
This project demonstrates that Hydromo is able to provide customized, modular wastewater treatment systems that can be used in difficult hospital retrofits. Selecting a packaged STP, Seva Bharathi Hospitals managed to overcome severe site constraints and attain zero-odour operation, full PCB compliance, and meaningful reuse of water, without any disturbance of the nearby community.
Hydromo is also known to assist the hospital with quality after-sales service and performance reviews that will lead to long-term success.
