Understanding and Fixing Google’s “Crawled – Currently Not Indexed” Status

If you’ve worked with Google Search Console long enough, you’ve probably seen this status:

Crawled – Currently Not Indexed

The first time I saw it, I assumed something technical had failed.

It hadn’t.

Googlebot visited the page.

The server responded correctly.

The content is loaded.

Google chose not to index it.

That distinction matters.

Crawling Is Not Indexing

Crawling means Google fetched your URL.

Indexing means Google added it to the searchable database.

Between those two steps, there’s an evaluation phase.

That’s where pages get filtered.

When a page is crawled but not indexed, Google is essentially saying:

  • I saw this.
  • I processed it.
  • I’m not convinced yet.

This is not a penalty.

It’s a quality decision.

What Usually Causes It

From auditing sites and fixing this repeatedly, the issue is rarely technical.

It’s structural.

Weak Differentiation

If your content feels interchangeable with existing indexed pages, it gets delayed.

Length doesn’t solve that.

Clear value does.

Weak Internal Linking

Google uses internal links to measure importance.

If a page:

  • Has only 1–2 contextual links
  • Isn’t connected from stronger cluster pages
  • Sits deep in the architecture

It gets crawled but not prioritized.

Internal links are signals. Not decoration.

Overlapping Intent

Two pages solving the same problem?

Google often indexes one and sidelines the other.

Thin (Even If Long)

Thin doesn’t mean short.

It means replaceable.

If your page doesn’t clearly outperform what’s already ranking, it struggles during evaluation.

What I Actually Do to Fix It

When I see this status, I don’t spam “Request Indexing.”

I:

  1. Improve differentiation (add clarity, not fluff)
  2. Strengthen contextual internal links
  3. Check canonical, noindex, redirects, and structural signals
  4. Request indexing once
  5. Wait and observe

Resubmitting the same page rarely changes anything.

Improving the signals does.

The Mental Shift

Instead of asking:

Why won’t Google index this?

I started asking:

Does this page deserve to compete?

That shift alone improved my indexing success rate.

Google isn’t random here.

It’s selective.
