I like to do pair programming with them. That’s actually a large chunk of the interviewing process. Just doing some work as a team, like someone would if they got the job. It’s definitely my favourite way of seeing how someone works, some of what their skill is and get to know them as well.
But this is pre-screening. We don’t use agencies/recruiters and sometimes get a large number of applications from people who aren’t developers but would like to be. I definitely get that. Being a developer is awesome! But we’re too small to take on folks who have no training (self training counts with me!)
I haven’t. I suspect that could work, but it’s not something they’d actually do in our organisation. I also know quite a few senior developers who wouldn’t know how to do that and would likely just not bother to simply be allowed to submit an application.

Have you tried the review PR method for pre-screening then?
Could you easily discern non-devs from devs by doing that?
