I think ethics in software engineering are extremely important when it comes to things that are easy to be objective about (privacy etc).
There are 2 sides to the argument regarding ICE and the fact that open source, a place where community is the most valuable thing, was the location for such a politically (and personally) charged attack is very wrong to me.
It's also worth mentioning that the US is not the world and as an outsider looking in it feels as though someone is enforcing their beliefs through a popular project in order to gain attention.
Facebook don't actually sell users information by the way, they don't have to. The changes I believe you're referring to are restrictions of access that developers have who use the Facebook Graph API.
I was thinking of the Cambridge Analytica data, and the way that Facebook allows advertisers to target its users. Advertisers can target based on demographics and interests, and Facebook added some restrictions to limit the ability to target based on hate groups.
