S3M files are becoming increasingly important in the field of 3D GIS. As an industry-standard 3D model tile data format, its core trend is cross-platform data sharing and interoperability, especially driven by national projects like the “Realistic 3D China” initiative, where its application has grown significantly. In a previous article, we learned how to convert S3M to OSGB format in GISBox software. Now, with the continuous updates of GISBox versions, this article will guide you through the process of converting OSGB format to S3M.
I. Create a New Conversion Task
- Open the GISBox software, select “S3M” in the “Tiling” section, and a “New Tiling Task” window will pop up.
- Import the local OSGB file. The export path at the bottom will display the default system path, which usually requires no modification.
- The “Spatial Reference” will be automatically recognized. If it fails to recognize, manual input is required. It is recommended not to change the “Maximum Concurrency for Conversion” If the conversion fails, reduce this value by half and retry. Once the task settings are complete, click “Create”
II. Process the Conversion Task
- After setting up the new task, the interface will jump to the task processing list, where you can see the conversion progress bar and duration.
- Upon successful conversion, the task will move to the “Completed” list, and a record indicating “OSGB to S3M Conversion Successful” will be displayed.
III. View the Converted S3M Files
Click the “Open Folder” icon button to navigate to the previously set export path, where you can view the successfully converted S3M files.
IV. Application Scenarios of S3M Files
As a universal data format, S3M supports the integration of multi-source data such as oblique photography and BIM, enabling the construction of city-level 3D models for digital twin cities and smart city management.
Used in 3D visualization systems for campuses and building information modeling (BIM) data sharing.
Supports design, simulation, and review in engineering fields such as architecture, roads, and water conservancy, providing 3D modeling for precise planning.
S3M data can be directly integrated into drone data processing pipelines, accelerating post-analysis workflows.
Summary:
This article details the complete process of converting OSGB format to S3M format using GISBox software, including key steps such as creating a conversion task (importing files, setting parameters), task processing, and viewing results. It also explains the important applications of S3M format in digital twin cities, smart city management, engineering design simulation, and other fields. Through standardized conversion methods, the cross-platform sharing advantages of S3M as an industry-standard 3D GIS format can be fully utilized, supporting data interoperability and efficient application in projects like the “Realistic 3D China” initiative.
