I have made my own music using ABC, originally I used abcm2ps and abcmidi, but now there's abcsvg, which allows to use abc notation directly in the browser. The syntax is slightly different from lilypond, but still straight forward and surprisingly readable.

Rosegarden won't import Lilypond at all, only MusicXML and MIDI. Seems that MusicXML might be an interesting format.
It indeed is, but unfortunately burdened with the XML overhead that is taxing on readability.
