India's Extraordinary Experiment against Coronavirus by lights off: Power Grid Issues

India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s nine-minute “lights off” call to show solidarity in the fight against coronavirus received an overwhelming response at 9 pm on April 5.

Apart from Germany, Australia and Japan, countries like Afghanistan, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Maldives, Vietnam, Israel, Tunisia and Mexico joined in the 9 pm 9 minute campaign.

It was a wonderful experience as Indian today for me. It's like Diwali ( A festival of Hindusin India) re-celebrated today. But it was call of our Prime Minister to every citizen to show solidarity in the fight against coronavirus.

Also, He said: "No one is alone in this Fight".

But there was a technical hitch. Experts said decreasing power generation to cope with the nationwide nine-minute shutdown and raising it within such short period of time will be a challenging task for grid operator and threatens its stability.

Our National Electric Grid due to sudden down fall in demand was expected to fail. Generally, our Grid System can swing between 5-8 % from norm but this blackout activity may lead to 10-12% differ from norm and leading to complete Grid Failure.

“As it is the electricity demand in the country has crashed due lockdown and the grid is balancing excess generation with low demand. If not blackouts, the announcement can lead to anxiety among grid authorities in these challenging times,” a former bureaucrat said.

How authorities managed to save National Electricity Grid from Failing?

  1. They did not allow all power substations to switch off together. Instead, they put a plan and each power station stopped electricity supply one after another. This kept Grid away from sudden demand blackout.

  2. They advised citizens to switch off lights at different intervals before and after 9.00 to 9.09 pm.

  3. The domestic lighting load is much less than 20 percent. Such kind of sudden reduction in demand can be fatal to our National Electric Grid. So, We only switched off Lights not our AC, Fans, etc keeping it more comfortable for our engineers.

4.the lights in Hospitals and all other essential services like Public Utilities, Municipal Services, Offices, Police Stations, Manufacturing Facilities, etc will remain on. The call given by Hon'ble PM is to just switch off lights in residences.

This experiment of to show 'unity' to Fight against Cornavirus was not possible if public was not aware of the technical hitches of the grid and their responsibility to keep it healthy.
