I'd also say that if you decide to make your site depend on a particular font, it'll look worse than broken images if it can't load the font. It'll just look weird and wrong. If you think that SVGs can fail to load as often as fonts, then contrast that with the idea that people can do all sorts of customisation to get the nice, big, clear fonts they want and ignore web designers' wishes.
