I would like to add my 5 cents: open source (~=hosted on GitHub) projects are crucially important for beginners as they can perfectly show your knowledge of both: the language and frameworks and as well best practices and rules of good code. And it’s even more valuable if you contributed to an OS project: that shows that the code written by you is actually accepted by the community.
