Sunsetting Atom... what is your next Editor?

I've been using Atom for very long time. To me, it has all I need to write Ruby on Rails, NuxtJS, NextJS, and react-native.

Now that Atom is going to be archived on December 15, 2022. I'm moving back to Sublime Text. I used to use Sublime Text a lot but I don't really like the color scheme. It's going to take some time to get used to new color scheme.

Are there anyone moving to Sublime Text instead of VSCode like me?

I saw this blog, and I tried all the dark theme. I end up using the original Adaptive Theme with Babel-Next color scheme.

Visual Studio Code for the Web to me. Visual Studio Code is the last resort to me!

I got so surprised how many users Atom has kept tractions from while just one year age gap between them (Atom 2014, VSCode 2015).

Why will not you choose VSCode? I would like to ask you what VSCode misses.

Note: I have never tried Sublime Text 4 yet.

Hi, thankz for answering.
I don't really like my first impression after installing VSCode since many years ago until now. Please note that this is my personal taste, VSCode is a good IDE. I just don't like it. It's like people who prefer XBOX over PC gaming.

1. The side bar - Really don't like that small explorer, search, extension bar on the left. I never had it in Sublime and Atom and I never feel like I will need it.
2. The file explorer - There are file icons which i think is on by default. I really hated that. Too many distraction for file with red icon like ruby.
3. Many unused menu features (for me) - EG. OUTLINE, TIMELINE, SOURCE CONTROL, Run and Debug, Remote Explorer. Basically.... about 90% of the UI given by default, I don't really need.
4. Code Completion - I don't rely on code completion much, when VSCode give me suggestions every time I typed something, it's absolutely annoying.

I know that there are ways I can customize VSCode to my needs, but I'm back to Sublime Text 4. Where the editor is plain and simple. Then I can just choose the extensions I really want.

You should use Sublime, which is what you want to use!

1. You can hide either or both of Activity Bar and Primary Side Bar! Primary Side Bar can be toggled by default keyboard binding. You said it does not exist in Sublime and Atom, so it would be Activity Bar.
2. Why not using Go to file... (sometimes called as Quick file navigation)? (Cmd+P or CMD+P) For me with this, I rarely use File Explore.
3. Totally agree with you! But you can hide most of them.
4. I have never tried, but you cane try it out to disable code completion very easily!

A quarter of a century ago, I preferred "XBOX" (I have never had a real Xbox though).

I use cmd+p and cmd+shift+p and many other shortcuts all the time. I only use file explorer sidebar to create new file/move files to specific folder. i just found it difficult to create file to specific folder using shortcut.

I admit I have a problem. I just don't like switching things off. I rather have a clean IDE and install what I need.

Let's say, a phone preinstall with apps I don't use vs another phone with just phone functions and app store.

I just hate it when someone decided that, user gonna need this, let's pre-install everything for every one and if they don't need it, let them google to find a way to turn if off.

I really understand your point! But VSCode is now opensourced so YOU can change the default others decided.

That is why I love OPENSOURCED VSCode while it was from Microsoft. Note I do not hate Microsoft.

I don't like many things Microsoft does, but I understand it's hard to please every one when it comes to software.

I think, even if VSCode is not opensourced by Microsoft, I still won't enjoy using it.

Let's hope one day some other IDE catchup. VSCode is leading in the market and I think it's bad not having competitors.

It was more so I need free and open source software, I feel other software is restrictive. I have decided that brackets is the answer to my problems. Also, like you, I am not a fan of VSCode's interface.

The sunset date is almost upon us but I'm at a loss as to why people think the Atom Editor will somehow just stop working come December 15, 2022 (unless I'm missing something).

I'm not into resurrecting something that's in an archive, but don't see that I need to do that to keep using Atom. It's not like an Apple App where after a certain date your development code stops working on you development device(s), at least that I can see.
